Sooner or later you are going to drop your 'bike - hopefully when you are wheeling it around the garage or at the traffic lights when heavily laden. If you have 'proper' protecton (crash) bars the chances are that only your dignity will suffer. In any case a GS only looks properly equipped if the bars are fitted. Did you not have the same brochure in England as in France with the mud covered 'bike in Peru ? Don't the bars look right ? Brian Rosen
