Have just got back from a brilliant weekend in the Auvergne, unfortunately the hoped for ride to the top of Puy de Dome wasn't possible due to work being carried out.

You'll have to park at the bottom and walk up, but no vehicles will be allowed up until the work is finished sometime in 2012 - good job we've been up before then!

It appears that they are planning to build a restaurant, visitor centre and shops on the top, as well as rebuilding the road.

But don't let that put you off visiting the Auvergne, it's still a fabulous place and was absolutely full of bikes last weekend.

That was the first time I managed to set on fire the front brakes on my BX - coming down Puy de Dôme.

ISTR there was a fairly scruffy wee zoo at the bottom with a bear in it. Is that still there..?

And there was the old Grand Prix circuit at Clermont Ferrand. I went howling round there in the BX with wife and kids swaying all over the place. I suspect you can't do that anymore...:nenau

Here is a pic taken 2/3rds of the way up Puy de Dom these are from 2 seperate trips last year.
