I believe the reason the Quest is going cheap is that v.8 of the software is due out soon and you can't upgrade from v.6 to v.8, only to v.7.
That's the caveat.
It's only Dixons that seem to be cutting the price of the Quest ( someone mentioned that they are now more interested in selling car-orientated systems). Anywhere else (even eBay) the Quest will cost you close on £200 more. I love mine.
I queried this with Garmin in August and received the following reply -
"If you purchased / registered a Garmin product with MapSource City Select ON or AFTER November 30th 2004 you are entitled to free update. If you purchased / registered before this date, you are able to update your mapping at the discounted rate of $75 USD+VAT.
At the moment there is verson 7 but there is a new verson 8 should be out by October, so it is up to you would you like us to send a verson 7 CD to you.
Or can wait and send us a Email around October time to get verson 8 CD.
To take advantage of this update please order a free Update CD for that particular MapSource product. "
This would seem to indicate that version 6 is upgradeable directly to version 8.
No I believe it was entirely due to Dixons getting a special bulk purchase price and the close proximity to the Quest 2 launch - upgrading from 6 to 8 is no problem.
