I have a quest 1 with City select 6, registered with Garmin - works OK. I've managed to get hold of a second unit (for me as the wife keeps snaffling the first one), a brand new Quest1 - boxed, unused, sealed City select 6 CD. I want to use the routes from my PC with it. Mapsource tells me to unlock the unit - what code do I use. I was hoping to try for an upgrade of the software from Garmin seeing as it's never been used; but I can't get hold of them - not even decent hold music, got fed up after 25 minutes. Anyone got any ideas or a solid contact at Garmin?

If you're phoning Garmin give yourself an hour, or do what I do and get SWMBO to do it :)

You have a couple of choices. :rob
1/ Register the 2nd unit as part of the registration of your first Quest.
2/ Register it as a seperate entity.

:D The benefit of option 1 is that you can sell off the extra copy of City Select and then only pay for map updates once for both your GPS's.

:( The down side is that you will probably have to pay for that upgrade to the maps (selling the 2nd city select should cover this though).

:D The benefit of option 2 is that you will probably be able to get the latest mapping for free.

:( The downside is that you will have to pay twice for any further map upgrades.

If I upgrade, whats been the changes from v6 that will benefit me, with a Quest1.
The postcode and POI bits are no use to me, are they?

You can't really sell the second copy of V6 as the unlock code it comes with is specific to the GPS unit in the box and as such is uselss to anyone else. You may as well just use the unlock code in the second box.

The upgrade will now be to City Navigator v8. Differences (in simple terms) are slightly heavier and more up to date maps. POI and postcode search are unit specific and the Quest 1 doesn't have this capability.

You may as well get CN v8 for the second unit to see if you like it as it will be free. If you like it then just get the second (free) unlock code for the first unit. Sounds complicated but it's simple really.

HTH

Adam :)

Correct me if I'm wrong (which I usually am).

If I use the 'unlock additional unit' option for my second Quest (so that I can use it now), will I lose the chance to get a free upgrade to v8? Do I have to install a second copy of Mapsource to register/unlock whatever the second unit otherwise?

The registration/ unlocking procedure is extremely convoluted IMO.

What you can do is leave the first quest alone for the time being.
With the new quest you can register it on garmin's website as normal and get hold of them at some point and get a v8 city navigator update for free. Get the new quest unlocked for v8 and you can then unlock the old quest using the additional unlock.

Then you have both quests with v6 and v8.

hope this helps. :thumb

I'm following this with interest.
Does the new software (is it new?), City Navigator, load and perform in the old Quest?
This is the replacement for City Select?

I have to agree with PeeBee, Garmin really know how to complicate stuff.

So - I shouldn't use the second unit until Garmin send me an upgrade to v8; provided that I can get hold of them and that they agree to upgrade?

With your second unit came an unlock code for CSv6 (on the yellow bit of paper). You can use the preinstalled mapping on the Quest but to transfer maps/routes you will need to put the unlock code into Mapsource

In my experience CNv8 works fine on the Quest although the map tiles are quite large in comparison with CSv6/7

Stick with the phone call to Garmin and ask for the upgrade DVD to be mailed to you. If you have both serial numbers for the Quests and both Customer codes (all this is on the yellow piece of paper) they may well generate and quote you new unlock codes there and then for the new mapping (if you want to borrow my v8 upgrade disc give me a call asap on 500652)

Just spoke to a nice man at Garmin (forgot to get his name tho'); pretty much as everybody has said - THANKS :thumb - v8 DVD on its way; use additional unlock for second unit with v6 and can use v8 on both when it arrives.

Thanks for the offer of a loan of v8, Kritou, but I'm off to Scotland tomorrow and my routes are all done in v6.

Cheers All :clap :clap
