Still can't get my new Quest installed properly, and am getting some very cryptic advice from Garmin.... could someone have a go at deciphering the following: I added my last couple of questions and replies also, and would appreciate some help!

I get the message at the end of windows attempt to install the Quest.

When I plug it in, I get a bubble saying "Found new Hardware... Garmin USB GPS"

Then a window pops up called the "Found new hardware wizard" Options are install automatically (recommended) or install from a specific location. (I have tried both)

When clicking next on the automatice option, windows searches (magnifying glass rotating over monitor) normally for a few seconds. It then appears to find some files.... little icons of documents moving from folder to folder.

Then the error message comes up.... Every time!!

Any clues?

I've done exactly what you said... I still get this message:

'CANNNOT INSTALL THIS HARDWARE' THERE WAS A PROBLEM INSTALLING THIS HARDWARE - GARMIN USB GPS

An error occurred during the
installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified. Click Finish to close wizard.

I've never had any trouble installing anything before, and I have also installed two previous Garmin GPS's (GPS12 AND GPSV) without any problem.

Mapsource does 'find' my Quest. And I have downloaded waypoints and tracks, yet every time I plug it in, I get the new hardware wizard.

Please help.... I'm getting desperate!

Yours Sincerely

It sounds like you have a USB problem....for some reason the drivers are dropping out each time you unplug.

I have to go through the same cycle of XP detecting a 'new' device' if I use a different USB port......but mine doesn't finish with errors.

Assuming you're on XP, make sure you're fully patched up..in particular, you need to make sure you have SP1 (Service pack one) as this was the big patch that sorted out many USB issues (including making sure the USB2 standard works properly)

SP2 is better and is the latest version...go to the windows update site and let it churn around getting all the updates, then look up 'USB2 Drivers' on the windows site specifically and make sure you're fully up to date (the Update site on its own seems to miss stuff occasionally)

I'd also try (after all that so everything's in place) unplugging the Quest, uninstalling Mapsource and all the map products fully, rebooting, re-installing them and then plug the USB back in...keep the lead in the same USB port permanently and it should work.

You can also get a high speed (USB2) PCI card for around 15 quid that will give you a couple od extra usb2 ports....I got a BElkin one the other day as I've got too many devices and not enough holes- it comes with a disc with its own drivers- that may be a good (if cheaty) way around your problem

Thanks for v comprehensive (and comprehendable) answer Fanum. I'll have another go. I'm not sure whether Brad Rose is deliberately writing nonsense or not, but I don't have the faintest idea what he is talking about!

Hmmm....reading 'tween the lines, I reckon he's saying that the drivers don't get installed in the registry until the maps are unlocked with the code that's held in the quest unit.....so unless you complete the process successfully, you get that 'found new device' message each time you plug the unit on the USB cable.

That sort of makes sense.....and as you may well have either a USB or an installation problem, it's causing the problem you describe.

de, then re-install from scratch and I reckon it'll sort itself (but do check the drivers etc as posted above ;)

Good luck :thumb

Eureka!

SP2 disk arrived today (Only a week after ordering)..... installed tonight.... problems solved! What a bleedin' relief!

Thanks for all the help
