The hardware question is easy, but I wasnt sure whether there were any differences between the maps used given the fact that they have differing names and the units have different memory sizes. This is the answer I got from Garmin in case anyone else is wondering the same thing.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin.

The basic core detail between matching versions and flavors of City Select
and City Navigator (City Select North America V6 and City Navigator North
America V6) are the same.

There are a few routing things that are different between them (in the
"guts" of it). The units designed for use with Navigator (the StreetPilot
III and StreetPilot 2610) can do a few routing things not possible with
Select maps (some turn restriction stuff). But these are overall small
things.

I would base my decision on the form of the unit. The differences between
the maps between these two is not huge...and they have the same core overall
detail"

The visual mapping and POI data is identical.

The intersection and road data (used for autorouting) is more extensive in City Navigator. Nobody can tell you how much tho.
