Trying to help a mate with a problem on his MAC G4 400mhz

It wont dial initialize the modem

So noticed a patch on the MAC site for OS X 10.2 is it OK for me to down load and burn this to CD on my PC, will his MAC read the CD or do I have to do some thing clever?

Graham

Should be fine!

A few months ago I needed a patch and couldn't download it from my MAC. So my brother loaded it onto his PC and emailed me the file.

If it doesn't work, let me know and I will see if I can download it for you and email it to you.

The worst that will happen is that the file name will truncate unless you make sure you burn the CD with Joliet turned on and choose the long filename option.

You only need to worry about this if the filename is longer than 8+3 characters (the +3 bit is the .doc or .exe or .pdf extension that PCs use)

The mac should still be able to read it even if the filename is shortened - so don't worry too much.

Any probs let me know and I can download it on my mac and post a CD off to you if you want.

Job done

But I also found out what the fault was he has some strange wiring in his house and has been swopping cables rounds to get his Sky dial up working.

Mac modems are wired different to all others if you ever need a replacement modem to wall cable pins 1 n 3, 2 n 4 are reversed ie outer pins to inner pins on a RJ11

Cheers

Ordinary phone extension wires work just fine though. There is no need to go hunting for special modem leads just ditch the one that came supplied. The problems only seems to surface when the supplied cable is used with an extension wire.

Boxer all iMacs come with an internal modem, why would you need an external one? The rev b has an integrated 56 kbps modem supports v.90 standard.

You can find out more about older macs at Lowend Mac which also has usefull links to upgrading. I swapped out the 6Gb hard disc for a faster 40Gb on an old slot loading iMac which I had thought was going to be tricky due to the all-in-one design but in fact was very simple and straightforward.
