So BMW have agreed to replace the RHS barrel on my 1200GSA due to corrosion. They say they will re-use the internals, piston, cam shafts etc. Does this sound right? I have re-conditioned a few car engines in my time and have always replaced the parts in their entirety.

Some misunderstanding going on me thinks.

My earlier bike had a new 'short' engine fitted, where they re-used the heads etc, but to re-use the pistons means splitting the engine, which I don't think they do.

Not on my part. I asked the specific question.

I’m not surprised that they are re using parts as your not changing for wear reasons as you would when reconditioning. I would be surprised if they don’t at least fit new rings though as they will have matched the old bores by now and may suffer some blow by in a new bore.

Same thinking here ref the rings

How do they replace the barrel, its part of the casting on the LC?

Replace the whole lot I suppose.

Apologies, looks like its the cylinder head they are changing out

yes, where it butts up to the block.

I hope they do a good job, something they done earlier...I wonder how they managed to do that:confused:

With me it was the short block that was being replaced as the heads were fine - corrosion on the joint was below the heads.

I'd be surprised if they re-used the head internals on new bare heads - economically it probably wouldn't be worthwhile and mechanically suspect practice. Old valves/springs/retainers/cams/followers in new head casings?
