Me and a mate are about to fit the BMW beak and touratech h/guard spoilers to the bike.

Daft question time; what kind of drill bit do we need?

I have to borrow the drill, and I'm as useful as a stoat with boxing gloves when it comes to anything requiring precision, so any tips appreciated.

I'll go and hide now :augie

An ordinary High speed steel bit will go through, and probably skid about making a pretty pattern on the paintwork unless you stick some masking tape or similar on there first to mark the holes and stop the bit from skidding, just take your time :thumb2

fit the adventure beak .... line it up and tape the rear section to the beak with gaffer tape... hold it steady and drill through the bolt holes and bingo...... insert bolts do up nuts... job done....

cheeky top tip..... match up the bolt diameter to the drill diameter... then you get a nice snug fit and no rattling around:rob.......

Daft question #2: what's the diameter of the bolts? The beak has the hex bolts, and the t-tech look normal.

I guess I should just measure them eh? :augie

I'm so ashamed. I was dreaming of women's bits when I should have paid attention in engineering (and technical drawing, and science, and Being a Man..)

...and common sense:augie

:D

I have no common sense. Not much, anyway. Otherwise I wouldn't even ride bikes, or plough money into them, or do stupid stuff on them.

I'm the opposite of autistic - I understand relationships and social cues but I can't remember anything that requires a shape, size, or any rotation-in-space.

I have to take photos of flat-pack furniture so I can build it again.

I wish I was kidding :blast

You never, ever, want to see me moving a sofa up a set of stairs..

find a practical Gs'er near you and get them to pop around and do it for you... then give them a beer... plenty of guys on here that will do it for fun!

Measure what you think is the diameter then go down about 3 sizes to a lot smaller bit. Drill using that then move up 1mm at a time, trying the bolts each time till it fits perfectly :thumb2

Go down about 3 sizes, 1mm at a time !!!!!!!!!!!!!! - the beak bolt is only 4mm diameter to start with. :D And it's plastic your drilling into, not hardened steel.

Just like drilling a number plate, just drill it and be done with.

Don't worry, I have a 3 three legged dog like that:comfort

Thanks for the tips guys (and for the GSers who sold me the system luggage).

I am now the proud owner of a black duck-billed platypus, dragging some ventriloquist-dummy boxes :D

Extension looks great. :thumb2

Can you give me the BMW part number for the 'beak' and the fitting kit, so that I can check prices locally.

Motorworks want £34.50 + £7.00 :nenau

Cheers, MB

I don't have the number to hand (someone one here probably does though).

I called my local dealer and they had one in stock. I think I paid 28 quid.
