R 1200 GS - Is the dealer telling me porkies!

I think that you'l find the final drive has a spring loaded 'rotary
knuckle' that allows for sudden loading by displacing and springing
back. Think that this was introduced into the BM final drives in

It's a brave man who says that on this forum, but you've got a good point in that BMW seem incapable of making transmissions and gearboxes that match the best Jap ones, seems they never have and possibly never will. Still we'll call it character and then we'll grow to love it!

Yes but remember there is a fundamental difference - the BMW has no primary drive reduction (because the clutch is directly connected to the crankshaft) - so the input shaft to the gearbox is spinning much faster than on a Jap 4 so smooth gear selection is maybe more difficult to achieve - but on the otherhand I could be talking nonsense!

I am in much the same position as recently bought a low mileage (as good as new 2100miles only) 1200gs-I find sometimes when going from neutral to first this does not go smoothly and have to lightly stamp on the gear shift to clunk into gear.This can sometimes be an issue when wanting to make a quick get away from neutral.

At what point does this become a warranty issue or alternatively is there anything which can be done to resolve?

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

I belive the 1200 does have primary drive gearing (ie before the gearbox) unlike the older boxers. And a lot of people say the new gearbox is better than the 1150 one (for example), perhaps this is a contributing factor.

Rather than stamping on the gear lever, apply normal pressure and let the clutch out slightly to turn the cogs. It will snick in easily and start to pull away.
