Hi - My newly purchased GS PD has no battery light showing on the dash - as the bike isn't charging. My local repair chap has tried to access the bulb but found that he has had to take off almost the entire front assembly - roo bars / cowl etc etc

Does anyone out there know of a more simple way of accessing this pesky bulb?

EASILY DISMANTAL the front fairing and you're good to go!;)
Unless you have the hands and fingers of a new born, believe me it's tight.:nenau

bulb access

Hi
I think you might get away with removing just the faring side panels and leave the bull bar in place. Mine is in bits at the moment so I can't check to be sure.
The indicators will have to removed but that's easy. The bulb holders are only push fit so easy to remove too - once you get at them!

the area behind the dash is an absolute bastard to get at. loads of bits have to be removed to gain access.

good news: it's not likely to be the dash lamp that's broken

bad news: it's more likely the alternator rotor's gone open circuit. a way more common problem.

when that happens, the bulb never lights as it's powered via the rotor windings. a cheap special tool is needed to remove the old rotor, which is easily accessible behind the front engine cover. lift the brushes and double check with a resistance meter across the slip rings. no reading means it's toast.

Thanks chaps -helpful - however apparently the rotor has been checked and is working !

How long does the dismantling of the side panel take including reassembly?

Pehaps an hour to remove and reinstall...

1. remove windscreen
2. remove windscreen mounting hardware
3. remove t/s cover, innards, and box, leaving the stalk in place
4. remove the assorted sidepannel mounting screws, 4 total I think, perhaps 5
5. wiggle the pannel around to find the spot it will just pass the 'roo bar and remove

Once you're in there you may have to remove the tachometer, it's held in by two white plastic nuts on it's backside
