Hi , in need of some information regarding rear wheel spoke replacement on a 1988 r100 GS.
Had an advisory on the MOT to day for loose spoke in rear wheel.
I tried tightening nipple but just keeps spinning, is it possible to replace the spoke with tyre in situ ?
Also is there a torque setting for the nipple & anything else I should be aware of.

Thanks,

Ian.

If it's a tubeless wheel and you can see the spoke ends I don't see why you can't change it with the tyre in place.

When I watched someone building a wheel, there was no torque settings, just a measure for true and tapping the spokes to hear what pitch the sound was.

As it's only one, I'd give it a go and tighten it and keep tapping it until it sounds like the ones around it. :nenau

In fact, I tightened one on my 1150 yesterday before taking it for the MOT. :D

Sounds like the thread on spoke on in the nipple has stripped, or the spoke is sheared.

Replace and tension as Tufty suggested.

If you have the wheel out, check other spokes. Preventative maintenance. You know it makes sense.

Up date on my post, well it turned out I may not of needed a new spoke if I knew what I was doing.
The Haynes manual is a bout as much use as Jeremy Clarkson in a caravan when it comes to the section on wheels, all is says is take your bike to a BMW dealership to have any work don on your wheels.
So that's why I posted on hear for some help, little did I know that the spoke nipple had a grub screw & if I knew I might have been able to tighten the spoke up.
Any how when I ordered the new spoke & nipple I was asked if I wanted a grub screw as well , I said I didn't have any so didn't order one.
It wasn't till the parts arrived that I rang motorworks up to query that I had the right nipple as it stated on there website that it an identical replacement for the original but the new nipple has a hole for a torxs tool like found on the later models allso the shanfer on the nipple looked larger than the original.
Any how this Is when I was enlightened as to the grub screw, yes the penny has dropped new spoke, nipple with grub screw all in & correct.
All I can say is you live & learn,

Ian
