I have a friend who has an R100R with a recurring problem which is proving very difficult to get to the bottom of so would welcome any further ideas!

Basic problem is that bike cuts out completely. It seems to happen mostly when it has been ridden for a while - it begins to choke, recovers, followed by a few more steady miles and then dies. New coil has been fitted, carbs have been checked as have fuel lines and fuel cap. Dealer it is with are at a loss as to what to do next.

Many thanks for looking :)

Previous owner of my 88 RT100 has a wad of bills for an ignition fault. The last bill was for the hall effect pick up. After this it seemed that it was OK.

He had the carbs cleaned, new coils, new HT leads, plugs, before that.

Check that the Bean can wire hasn't been trapped under the front cover. Done this myself and fixed a couple that have had the same issue. Once the engine cools down does your friends bike fire up again?

Thanks for replies - yes, once cooled bike starts up again. Bean can wire - is that what BMW call it? (just never heard of that before :))

It's the ignition trigger unit that sits at the bottom of the casing under the front cover, looks like bean can, the wiring to it hangs loose and runs up the side of the alternator, it's very easy to pinch it under the front cover. If its trapped the engine warms up pinching the cable shoring the signal to earth. I rode nearly 20 miles in 5 minute stages until I realized what I'd done.

Thanks for the advice - have passed comments on to her and hope she can get it sorted. :beerjug:

Bike now sorted thanks to help given here - it was a problem with the 'bean can'. :beerjug:
