R100R

This is my R100R It originally came from the UK. The previous owner to me imported it to Ireland. He unfortunately passed away and I have it since 2007. It is a fantastic bike, I put a Keihan 2into 1 and replaced the forks as they were pitted slightly. I bought a set of second hand forks on ebay. I recently replace the saddle cover (not in photo). I bought the saddle cover on the Germany ebay. There are a good collection of parts on it ebay.de. It running a bit rough at the moment and I need an experience airhead mechanic to have a listen to it.

Looking forward to seeing the photos of the Polaris fairing

I've been reading up on Seafoam it sounds good. Where could I get it?

Hiya, Zofo,

Owner of a Mystic here; might want to check your timing, clearances and carbs; checked mine and it was off.

Cheers

Thanks Slowkitty, I just did the valves yesterday and had the carbs balanced, I think it maybe the timing and if not that I will get the carbs cleaned fully.

Hi Zofo, nice looking R100R by the way - I was considering one just like that before I went for the Mystic. Seafoam is common in the States, but getting it across this side of the Atlantic is quite difficult. In the end I got mine from an ebay supplier - item 320600997212 is for sale at the moment; this guy is in Wales so I guess he should be able to send it over the Irish Sea. Using seafoam is pretty straightforward, and you just tip some into the petrol tank; this reacts with any water in the fuel before dissolving gunk in the carbs. To thoroughly clean the carbs I filled each bowl then left it to soak overnight - be aware the bike will not start until you get some petrol back through the system! I also had to replace the bowl gaskets afterwards, so you might want to order a pair beforehand.

Thanks for that Orkneywind. I did'nt like the purple colour at first, but it has really grown on me, it seems to be quite unusual. I will track down the seaform on Ebay, Thanks again

My mate Dennis rode around Mongolia on his modified R100R, he'd had several airhead GS's before but thought this bike much more suitable for overlanding.

The main limitations being a fairly cramped riding position prevented him from standing which meant he was much slower than our GS's but I rode it and found it had a stonking engine:thumb

Good to see some more R100R's on the road, and I've managed to get my Mystic out most of the spring, summer and autumn this year. I took it out last winter, but the salt on the roads had the usual affects on the spokes and chrome, with the collector box rusting through. I replaced this with the Keihan 2 into 1, and didn't notice any real change to vibration or power.

I did have some minor vibration problems when I got the bike, cured by balancing the carbs and by using Seafoam http://www.seafoamsales.com/motor-treatment.html. This is an American product, and is pretty good at shifting deposits in the carbs and also removing any water in the tank. Once the seafoam did its job, the engine was almost purring. Apparently you can also use it in the sump to shift carbon deposits before an oil change, but I haven't been brave enough to try it that way!

I'm now in the process of fitting a Rickman Polaris fairing to the bike. The Polaris was the fairing to have back in the early 80s, and you can still get a hold of the original ones for the BMW - it looks much better than the one designed by BM for the RT. The brackets seem to fit perfectly, however the R100R has the GS tank, and is slightly wider - looks like I'll be getting out the angle grinder on the fairing bracket. I'll post some pics once I've got the mechanics and electrics sorted out.

Don't forget to check the fairing fits round the tank before you start grinding bits off :rob

My Mystic goes alright (not as good as my GSPD) but you'd wonder how given the air injection reduces the exhaust port opening by about 25% compared to a normal head. I had a quick look at the photos on this thread and it seems you blokes missed out on the air injection :( :D We must have got US bikes over here. Will post a pic when my computer connection speeds up a bit. Be interesting to swap heads at some stage although they still claim 60hp for the injected models.
