R1100GS buying advice

I am going to buy an 1100GS BMW soon I hope and wondered if anyone knows what to check when looking at one

What common problems do they have?

Do things go wrong at certain mileages?

What should I keep my eyes open for?

There are a lot of very happy 1100 riders on this forum so I wouldn't be at all apprehensive about buying one.

The finish on the wheels like a lot of the GS range is crap - powder coating works well. And cold morning starts can mean reseting the ABS - if you get a bike so equipped - but its no big deal and an optimate usually sorts it.

Check the f/b master cylinder, these have been know to leak on early bikes - if you pull back the rubber seal over the actuating rod you will see fluid.

Check the push rod seal on the back of the bell housing, you don't want to see oil here.

Keep it serviced, keep an eye on the clutch free play adjustment, then just ride the wheels off it.

Other than that ask Steptoe (resident techie) Vern, Gecko, Matron, BHT, Motomartin....

Hi Winston

Go and buy one, I bought mine a couple of months ago and think I will be keeping it for some time. You have to give BM's time to get under your skin as they are quirky and a bit different from just about anything else. This is my sixth BM but my 1st Oilhead (had a brick for a while but police motorcyclist kept nodding to me)
I paid a smidgen over £2500 for a 1994 with about 30k on the clock and fitted with ZEGA panniers. Top Bike...

R1100GS

Ive had my 94 R1100GS for2 years and ive been off it 4 days
its done about 65000 miles and nothing major has gone wrong
ive had one accident on it down to a woman amd a mondeo. the mondeo came of worse.

Ive toured on it,off roaded on it and when you fancy a thrash
it will do that to.


But.. there isnt much paint left on the engine. the front wheel hasnt any.

But who cares about little things like that not i.
