R1100GS Y-piece question

I have been reading all kinds of threads about Y-pieces and end cans and have been inspired to give it a go on my 1999 R1100GS purchased in Belgium so maybe this is different to UK specs.

A few questions :
1) How do I tell if I have a cat ? (no dog jokes please...)
2) Has anyone just replaced the Y-piece on an R1100GS and then stuck the original end can back on ? If so what's it like sound/performance etc ?
3) If I go ahead do I need to do anything with all that electronic injection trickery ?
4) Which Y-piece to go for ?

All advice read with interest.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news mate,but the R1100GS doesn't have a Y piece,only the 1150 has them.If you've got a cat,there should be a fitting screwed into the exhaust next to the right hand foot peg,the wires coming from it are used to hurl it into the sea where they belong.Good luck.Having said that,someone will make a joke about hands and foot rests,you wait.

That could explain why I can find anything resembling a Y- piece on mine
Any idea what alternative exist for the R1100GS ? Is it just an 'S' section to replace where the existing collector box sits and then up to the end can ?

Oh yeah - no wires anywhere to be seen so I do not have the eco-warrior version !!

I've got the tube on my R1100GS.

for details of the "connecting tube" manufacturers and suppliers got to our website at 2 Ride The World. Then click on "bike mods" link on the right. There's also photo's and installation intructions, pretty straight forward stuff.

Thanks Simon. But now I am confused again because in your write up you mention the cat is in the collector box whereas earlier I had been led to believe I would see some wiring on the silencer. I am beginning to think that the UK model is with CAT whereas mine is without - did you have some wiring for the sensor somewhere ?

Gecko,don't listen to that old tart,he knows nothing at all,but he could still talk on the contents of a ping-pong ball for half an hour without drawing breath.Where the exhaust runs under the right hand cylinder (as you sit on the bike), it joins to the centre box just in front of the rear brake pedal. The lamba sensor should be screwed into the colector box,have a good dig about,and if you still aren't sure,go and get a grown up (works for me)

Vern, ping pong balls have feelings to you know

As far as I know (Vern will correct me if I'm wrong) the Cat itself is housed inside the collector box/centre box of the exhaust (big lumpy bit that sits in between the header pipes and the rear silencer, underneath the bike. As vern says the Lambda sensor (mine had one) is bolted on the the right hand side pipe (just after where the two header pipes come together.

All of mines been replaced so now I've got no Lambda and no colector box (hence no cat), just the connecting tube.

Any help????

Cheers guys - as I have just recently acquired a full workshop service manual - some 400+ pages I'll have a good look when the snow melts. If not I guess I could always check with my dealer , they should know ...I hope
