Hi Guys, I am just going through my newly acquired R1100RS, 1993, 28,000 miles, and it's been stood 3 or 4 years. I am replacing the brake hoses, usual "inner linings loose" syndrome. The "bleeding" syringe is on its way !

The alt belt looks fine, but the pulleys are the old style, according to the Haynes Manual, spot welds on bottom pulley etc. I cant find any evidence that the belt has been changed thus far.

I would like to update to the new design pulleys. The crankshaft pulley is easy to remove, foot on back brake etc, but I guess that the alt will have to come off to remove it's pulley. The bolt is torqued to 50Nm, so I would have to lock the alt shaft to remove it.

Any comments or suggestion chaps ?

Don't know about the belt but I rebuilt a 1996 R1100RS last year and it cost a frickin fortune. Got a good deal on some Goodridge braided brake hoses but Venhill also do them as well as clutch and throttle cables. Once the new brake lines are fitted and you have bled the system, keep an eye on the front brake master cylinder as the seal can go west rather rapidly.

If you remove the alternator, an impact gun - like the ones you remove car wheel nuts with - will have the pulley undone in about 2 seconds, without the need to 'lock' the unit. Take the alternator and your new pulley to a local garage and they'll sort it for a couple of beer tokens.

Thanks for the replies Guys - all good stuff. I bought the bike from RiteBike, Bradford (linked to "webuyanybike.com I think) who had fitted new pads all round as I requested. Their fitter should have known that there was a brake problem when he had to crack the bleed nipples on the front calipers to get the pistons back in.

Anyway I asked them to supply me with a set of Goodridge hoses from Motoworks, which they did ( delivered the next day !) and I am changing the hoses and generally checking round - and the "bleeding" syringe has just arrived too ( ABS model )!!

She is in pretty decent nick, slight corrosion on the rear subframe, but looks better with a wipe over with ACF 50.
We bought a new one of these in 1996, the wife loved it - mind I did splash out a small fortune on a Corbin Seat, very smart ( the wife wasn't too shabby either ! )

Does anyone know why they changed the design of the pulleys, any failures known about ??
