Hi folks

Im possibly thinking of getting a R1100s. Have any of you had one in the past are they any good for all year riding
Or should i just stick with my R1100GS?

Stevie,

I've just traded my 2000 R1100S sport in for a 2003 R1150GS. (twin spark). Sadly, I had to sell my R100GS as well.

I miss the S, it is a fantastic handling bike when you get used to it. Loads of torque in the right places. It took me and the missus over the Alps, Pyrenees, Picos de Europa etc. without missing a beat on a couple of occasions. Fastest thing around the Grossglockner was an 'elderly' Austrian on a red S, (despite black being the fastest colour).

On the down side were the plastics. Particularly around the fairing etc. They are very vulnerable to damage in even minor spills.

The battery location and access is another problem. All the panels need to come for access. Best to replace it with a Hawker early on. If you do have to jump start it, remove the starter cover for access to the live feed.

You will feel vibration through the handle bars more than on the GS but this varies with the state of the engine tune (valve clearance, throttle balance etc).

On the whole I'm pleased with the 1150GS. The 100GS felt more chuckable because of it's lighter weight, and the 1100S more powerful and faster, but the 1150GS makes me grin, and isn't that what it's all about? :D

Hi Stevie,

I bought one new in 1998 and ran it for 3 enjoyable years. I've never ridden an 1100 or 1150 GS but I can say that my 1200GS outshines it in the engine, braking and handling departments. on my usual type of roads (West Pennine Moors) the GS is far superior.

tarmac roads are boring...

Why not have a advneture of life and get away from that boring tarmac filled with sportsbikes. Ride around home to places far away, nomatter what condition roads awaits you there:

... the boxer GS is made for that...

Think different. Be unique. Life is an adventure.

Well Mo-tech, if you're just popping out to the shops, can you bring me a Mars bar and a packet of crisps please?.... :)

Your fabulous photos sum up what this bike is all about.

Thanks Mo!

Thanks for the treat! Got my blood stirring. Opps got to go, the sun is shinning. CaptainGS

the S is a great bike

i've had an S for a while now and it's a great bike - although the engine is basically it really does fell different to the GS range of bikes. although much sportier it is also comfortable enough to tour on. mine now sports ohlins and i can't wait to get her on to a track next year. i also have a GSA in the garage and if i had to ride 200 miles in the morning which would i take - well probably the GSA if it was wet and the S if the sun was shining! (so that'll be the GS then!) - still roll on summer

The pic with the moontins in the background and the bike from the rear is marveiwlous. Now set as wallpaper, the first for ages. Ta

There's one just like this for sale in Roy Pidcocks, a real eye catcher. :)

 Eye catcher? Hmm... Very relative.

But indeed, i like the flat-twin-engined stuff much more than those Ks! Boxas are few factors more unique on engine side for sure, making them more eye catcher for mc people.

I just LOVE those cylinders - the welcoming warm air for my legs riding in cold Estonia :) :

But if (IF!) i'll ever get rich enough i'll buy this:

Two friends of mine have them, great bikes very nimble and can be chucked through the twisty stuff very quicky and easily, but apart from top speed, I can't see any gain from changing to one from a GS:confused:
