Hi Beemers ....... This pinking noise has driven me up the wall... had it for the past 6 months.. seems to be coming from front part of engine , near alternator... only does it for the first 2 minutes of starting , only when changing gears. stop hearing noise when engine warms up.... If I go for a spin , switch off engine for ex an hour and restart , it does nt do it...bike has to be really cold to make the rattling noise. My mechanic changed my alternator belt and even dismanteled the alternator.... no success.... Any tips what this might be.... Appreciate:blast

I think you need the 'Technical' section where you might attract the attentions of the mighty Steptoe :bow

Hi Steptoe ....... sure would appreciate Your opinion here..... !!!!!!

Do a search under "cam-chain tensioner".
Old style rattle on L/H cylinder on start-up.
Do you use 10/40 oil at all?.
Another possibility.
If it occurs when changing gears,it may be the clutch friction plate rattling on a worn g/box i/put shaft.
How many miles/kilometres on the bike?.

Rattle on taking off for first mins...

Hi Colban..... The oil I use is silkoline super 4 20 50. The bike has 33000 k and has been treated better than my girlfriend..! as you said , the rattle does happen after each gear change , especially the first 3 gears.. If I use the choke I eliminate most of the rattle but don t see why I should b forced to use choke. Would apreciate your reply

Sort of tinkle cum squeal noise, like really bad pinking at the same time as the alternator belt is slipping? My 1150 sometimes does that when cold, just the first couple of gearchanges (or when the throttle is given a blip to pick up from idle with the clutch in). No idea what it is, I didn't think it sounded serious so I ignored it. Don't think I've heard it since the 24,000 mile service, but it'll probably be back tomorrow morning now I've said that...

Using 20/50 oil is good.
The "choke" mechanism is simply to open the butterflies to raise the idle speed. If a noise disappears when you load the mechanism, there may be something loose in it.It also might be worth searching for "ticker killer" as you may have a worn butterfly pivot.

mine had it. eventually put it down to the alternator drive belt being either cold or slack.
never got round to investigating further. did 14K on it and it never got any worse.

Do you have crashbars fitted.

Are they loose, or any of the mounting points cracked.
