Hi, New to the site so please be gentle!! Just fitted 17" alloy wheels to my 2001 R1150GS but the ABS light keeps coming on ~ sometimes after several miles - sometimes after 30 or so miles. I've set the sensor gaps to 0.045mm as recommended. I note the ABS rings are manufactured differently too. Anyone have any ideas what's wrong please?

Speed Related?

Think it may be speed related. Thought I'd try varying speeds and all was fine until a certain speed (on a private road of course). Reset the warning light and it and didn't come back on until the speed was reached again..................Not checked the sensor ring teeth yet.

I take it your bike is an ABSII rather than servo ABS??

Can you not fit your old ABS rings to the new wheels and try again (use a heatgun{lightly} or boiling water to soften the threadlock or you'll wreck the alloy!) I have the reset procedure for the ABS II somewhere If you need it?

BUT It may be down to the controller reading the front wheel travelling outside design parameters i.e. a 17 " front would be a smaller wheel than standard and therefore with a smaller circumferance and will rotate more per distance travelled than the 19 inch that should be on it
Without doing the maths for example if you were to put the 19 inch standard back on perhaps it will do 80 revolutions to cover 100metres, whereas the 17 will do perhaps 87 rotations and then the computer thinks that one of the sensors is faulty. The simplest way of worting that is get BM to stick it on a Moditect or GT1 and diagnose it If it shows wheels speed difference "improbable" then it's solved refer to above and swop ABS rings

I fitted alloys to my 03 1150 adventure it has servo ABS and i used the Pressed ABS rings that where fitted to the origional wheels....i have not had any problems with the abs warning light up as of yet......I was told you have to use a matching set otherwise it confuses the sensors as it thinks that one wheel is turning faster......at what speed is the fault occuring........steve

It thinks your rear wheel is slipping all the time because of the wrong front wheel size. Assuming you kept a 17' rear, the front hub RPM has increased relative to the rear.
As this is incongruous data it assumes it(the ABS control unit) has gone wrong and spunks out to save you from itself.

If it's like the car systems it doesn't compare the data from wheel to wheel, it compares it against a set of parameters, bear in mind the ecu detects AC voltage sent by the sensor and because it is AC it is looking for a dramatic change in individual wheel speed and that's when it will actuate the solenoid in the modulator, it will go into pressure hold mode. The only time with the car systems it compares wheel speed is for the traction control systems and tyre pressure warning systems (new Mini). hope this helps.

17" abs fault

Pike,

I fitted 17" alloys to my 01 gs (non servo abs) at the same time replacing the original cast abs rings with the pressed tin ones. I had the fault lights on above, ahem, 105mph. I bought a bag of shims on ebay and carefully reset the gaps. Now fault free.

ps. set up on the mountain during mgp:augie

Dammit,looks like you've got a real problem.
Seeing your handle,i've got this picture lined up.
Cant you ask a "which oil should i use" question,PLEASE.:D
Welcome to the forum.:thumb

Old Wheels are Back!

Ok, had a look at the wheels again last night. Nothing wrong with the ABS sensor ring. Checked the sensor gaps, all wonderful. looked at replacing the pressed steel sensor rings with the cast ones from the spoke wheels but they were a different mounting so I couldn't go there. Fault light - still came on. So to check it wasn't a sensor fault, the old wheels went back on. No problems at all.

Thanks for everyones help - I'll probably just stick with the originals!

Anyone want to buy some alloys???

Pike.......did you get the ABS rings with the wheels?..are they from that set of wheels?.....when i was enquiring about fitting alloys i got on to motorworks and the sent me a list of what i needed and on the list was the following
WHA52084 ABS RING R1150 FRONT 1 £39.29
WHA52085 ABS RING R1150 REAR 1 £39.2
link to them is at the top of the home page
they said that i needed to swap over the ABS rings to the above.because of a speed related problem? ....i just used the ABS rings that where on the orig, wheels.............count the number of raised portions on the old cast rings and compare them with the number of solid portions on the new rings............dont give up on the alloys..........it turns the lardy old BMW into a fast steering MEGAAAAAAAAMOTO:bounce1.....i have had no problems yet....thats why i asked at what speed does your abs light come on
steve

Speeeeeed

The warning light comes on at around 85mph. Fast enough you might say but annoying all the same! I'll give Motorworks a bell. Ta........

Phoned Motorworks - they can provide a sensor ring for the front but it's no different from the pressed steel one I already have. I'll have another look at it tonight.
