R1200 GSA Rear Shock Help

HI IM new to the forum and was wondering whether anyone could help me, I find the bike a little tall and have purchased a lowereing Hyperpro spring kit , has anyone got any detailed advice /tips instructions as to how the rear shock comes apart , the bike is a 2007 model.

I have managed to get the shock off the bike with no stress but I think I need to remove the adjusting mechanism and now im stumped , I do have the coreect spring compression tool.

Any help greatly appreciated.

The Example shock on page 23 of the instruction book looks just like the GS shock, including the securing screw. It sounds quite straightforward, at least from the safety of reading the mounting instructions on the sofa...

When we fitted the lowering springs to Jackie's F800GS both Performance Parts Limited and Calsport ( PPL's retail agent) were more than helpful with advice and tips. At the time their spring compressors used by our local Hyperpro dealer did not fit the F800GS so the rear had to be sent back to Calsport... The GSA has been around a lot lomger so you should not face that problem

I am interested to hear how you get on, I may fit standard length Hyperpros to my GSA as a cheaper upgrade of the stock shocks.

Did you hire, buy or already own the compressor ? If you have the Nippy one and intend to sell it back to Nippy's, I might be interested at the same price

OK I have soldiered on and now have completed the Project. Ok I'll list the tips for people who want to do this themselves.

The rear shock:

When you get it off the bike, undo the small allen screw on the rear of the adjuster and this then allows it to spin, I modified the Hyperpro spring compressor so it hooked onto the spring and only compressed the spring rather than the whole shock when the spring is compressed about 15mm this allows the adjusting mechanism to drop revealing a silver large circlip remove this and the decompress the spring the shock comes apart. reverse the steps to put the shock back together.

The Front shock is a lot more difficult to remove.

Remove Tank
undo nut on top of shock 15mm ratchet ring spanner or crows foor required as you need to hold it still with a 5mm allen key.
remove rubber bush and washer under nut
undo bottom bolt
remove crash bars from front of bike
undo and remove black plastic belt cover
At this point you need to lift the bike up at the front I had the bike on the centrestand and jacked up the front under the sumpguard with a rubber pad and this lifted the centrestand off the ground which i then put 20mm of timber underneath to give me a little more height , its probably wise to have someone hold the bike at this point.
shock can now be removed
Hyperpro spring compressor will compress the front shock and when compressed it has a circular compression plate that comes out and this allows the spring to come out.

Again just reverse to reinstall I don't know the torque settings for the bolts but the bottom shock ones are very tight and the rear shock bolt has threadlocking compound. Make sure you have a good set of tools especially TORX Drive sockets and a long breaker bar.


Bike has dropped about 30mm but it now feels really stable and handling great the spring rates of the progrssive springs are just right Im very pleased a very worthwhile job. Don't attempt this unless youre pretty handy with tools and have a comprehenisve set of good quality, the fastners torx drive head can easily be damaged.
