R1200GS 2008 1st Gear Max Revs / Speed

Prior to the 2010 model the GS speedo didn't have a red line at 50kph indicating the max speed for first gear. 50kph is about 4750rpm on the 2008 model.
Does this mean that the rider should not go over 4750rpm in first gear. If he/she did what would the end result be?

Ever seen what a snapped small-end on a conrod at speed does ?

It's messy and expensive.
 
1. Why then do the pre 2010 gs models not have the red line on the speedo?
2. Why does it make a difference what gear the engine is in ie 6th gear 6000 rpm not problem, 6000 rpm 1st gear problem? Is it to do with the resistance the engine encounters in the different gears ie 6th gear greater resistance, 1st gear least resistance?
 
Full revs on low throttle put a serious stretch on the conrods because there is not enough pressure above the piston. I don't know about BMW, but some engines ECUs won't allow max revs unless the throttle is wide open.

Put a pair of (huge) 600 cc pistons at higher revs and full throttle in bottom gear and see if the front wheel stays down.

Who told you that this line meant max speed in first gear??:nenau

More likely it highlights the speed limit of 30mph/50kmh normal speed in towns.:nenau

And I'm not a died in the wool grumpy airhead rider that slags off 1200s. I have one myself.
It would be just as fuckin' funny in any other thread.

In days gone by lots of speedos were redlined or white lined at 30 mph.

The bike would wheelie over backwards.

Wheelies are best done in 2nd gear, then once up, short shift into 3rd.... :D
 
Spend more time looking at the road. There is no need to red line the motor in any gear just change up when it feels right leaving enough revs to either accelerate or slow down using engine braking in each gear. JJH

A couple of times I have pinned the throttle in first on a quick take-off. It wheelies quite easily way below max revs. I wasnt trying, but I felt the front come down.

In bottom gear the engine will easily rev to the limiter but as said before the engine is unlikely to be working hard so the conrods will get a work-out. Thankfully Beemers are not noted for throwing a rod.
