R1200GS electrics for Zumo and Scala Rider?

Hi, I've just recently bought a 2005 R1200GS, and a Zumo 660 with Scala Rider bluetooth headset is on order. The bike has a 4 pin socket on a cable that is fitted to what I believe is the accessory plug, down by the headstock. I will need to fit a plug/cable for powering the Zumo. Also I want to be able to charge the Scala Rider when I am away touring. Any recommendations on how to do the electrics? I am thinking that installing a standard 12V cigarette lighter type socket, wired to the accessory plug would give maximum versatility. Any recommendations on such a socket? You can either put a dedicated socket in or use an existing socket with an adaptor.

Nippy Norman (a site advertiser) sells the sockets and / or a suitable adaptor or you can buy them quite easily at Halfords. Nippy also sells a screen surround which several bods use. It has a spare cigarette lighter socket alreday installed, along with a spare din socket.

Me, on a 1200GSA? If I did not have the optional socket socket on the beak, I would install one or get someone to do it for me. From that I would simply run a cigarette lighter adaptor into a tank bag.

I have a Scale G4, If it helps I get about 14 hrs use from a single charge with radio on.
 
In the interests of simplicity I prefer to run my toys from their internal batteries and use the USB ports on my Samsung netbook as a charging hub overnight - so, just one laptop charger has to be carried to cover my Garmin Quest, mobile phone, camera and Inforad K1
 
My wife and I both use Autocom powered from bike but still have the requirement to charge PMR radios, two different mobile phones, laptop, camcorder and two different makes of still camera when camping. I baulked at the cost of buying 12 volt chargers - if I could find them for everything so my answer was to buy a small 12v inverter.

The one I got came from Maplins and is a flat unit, a little smaller than a paperback book. As many of my chargers use figure eight leads, instead of taking the usual 1 - 2 metre leads supplied with kit I made up one lead, 6 inches long for use with all chargers but a couple of items have the charger/mains plug combo so have to be taken as is. Everything goes in an old first aid kit zip case and takes up very little room in a pannier.

The inverter works quite happily on the GS standard 12 volt socket (after changing the fitted cig lighter plug) and has always been used engine off with no affect on the battery's ability to start the bike the next day with the bonus that I can use my mains powered airbed pump.

I also pack a second 6 inch long figure eight lead with a continental plug so I can charge kit in hotels so avoid the need for 12v chargers for use on the bike plus mains chargers for use in hotels. Also as more kit is standardising on using mini USB leads for charging some chargers can be dispensed with and the laptop used as a charger - with the inverter charging the laptop when required.

Tis the G4 I am waiting for. 14 hours with radio sounds very good. I will be camping and probably with no 240V available, hence the question about charging using a 'cigarette lighter' type socket. Would the canbus allow current flow after the ignition is switched off?

It does for a while if there is a load on the socket before the ignition is switched off. My original short term solution was to have a socket on a fly lead under the seat, connected direct to battery via a fuse. Out of the way, easy to get to when parked. Now have second socket on left of beak (in position BMW designed for it). Again wired direct to battery via fuse. This was originally installed for Gerbings heated jacket as it uses too many amps for the standard socket but is also very useful for charging, either with ignition off or on the go as items being charged can easily be placed in pocket or tank bag (not 240v though).

Are you using the Scala Rider 4 with any of the BMW satnavs? I am having difficulty pairing the Scala 4 with the latest Navigator 4, to get the music bluetoothing? I am pretty certain there is an incompatibilty problem between the two. Anybody get similar experiences?
