Hello, I'm going to buy a GS later this year, however on my current race bike I run a GP shift Pattern (first gear is 1 click up, second gear - 6th are click downs etc..) Does anyone know if it is possiable to change the R1200GS to suit my riding style? I'm in the US so i'm not sure if the transmission/gear box is different from most GS owners in the UK.

Thanks for the help.

You expect a German company to deviate from all the bikes they build for the rest of the world just for your market ??

I expect that apart from Californian emissions controls, the bikes are identical, especially the engine and gearbox major components.

On some bikes you can unbolt the shift arm bellcrank and invert it to give you 1 up 5 down, however the GS goes directly into a shift mechanism shaft so you can't change it that easily.

it has nothing to do with markets , as the guy states he is used to riding a race pattern 1 up / 5 down , most race bikes use this gear patern as it allows you to change up easier whilst cranked over and accelerating out of a corner.

anyone who has ever ridden a race bike and found themselves changing down instead of up (or vice versa on a road bike) will understand this and have sympathy for jamaal ;)

I'll take a look at my bike tonight and let you know if it would be possible

Well said yellowfriedegg :thumb . It does suck BIGTIME downshifting when you meant to upshift while doing 140mph at any given race track. Thanks for looking into this for me. :clap

Sorry to take so long to re-post , I've been on holiday :)

I checked the gear shifter out on my GS (1150 adventure) , unlike most japanese and italian bikes which I have owned previously where the gear selection shaft rotates fore / aft to select the gears , ie the shaft centre line runs east west if the front of the bike is north , on the GS the gear selection shaft rotates left / right , ie the centreline of the shaft runs north south.

There is a linkage between the foot selector and the shaft but it does not look like this could be reversed easily to achieve the 1 up 5 down pattern which you desire :(

The link runs up from the foot lever and connects to a collar on the shaft on the outside of the bike , this means that pressing the lever down turns the selector shaft anti clockwise , to reverse this pattern the collar would have to be rotated 90 degrees so that pressing the lever down turned the shaft clockwise , I don't think the shaft sticks out of the engine casing far enough to give enough clearance to rotate the collar as required :(

I don't know if the 1200 is the same , I'll have a wee look next time I'm in the dealers and let you know.

Didn't I say that earlier ?????

No , not really , there is still a bell crank type linkage on a GS gear shift , just due to the nature of the way it is fitted there is insufficient clearance to reverse it's movment easily

I wouldn't be surprised if the bikes in the boxer cup have a race (reverse) pattern shift , perhaps the linkage from one of those would fit a GS ?

thanks

Oh well, thanks for looking into this for me. I'm going to call the dealer today and see if their is anything that can be done. I would love to have a GS as my daily commuter/adventure weekend bike, but I can't change my riding style just to have one :( There's is always hope tho! Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated.

Did the race series R1100's have reversed selection ?

If they did then surely would be possible on a GS.

Don't know how to find out though.

Your dilemma

I can appreciate the problem ! I can easily change from one bike to another, from a LHD car to a RHC, drive on the right to drive on the left - but it too me YEARS to adapt when the gears went over to the left and worked the other way round. Best of luck, Brian
