Just wondering if any of our BMW riders have come across an issue I’m having with my 2016 R1200GS.
Recently, the multi function control wheel has stopped working and will not function with my Garmin VI SatNav. (The Garmin does however work independently).
I have tried sandpapering the contacts on the back of the SatNav and on the cradle. I have also updated the Garmin to the latest version. The control wheel still will not operate the SatNav.
BMW garages seem to want around £100 just to diagnose the problem. Can anyone recommend something else I can try, before I have to take the plunge and get BMW Mottorad involved?
Thanks

Mine had a similar fault last weekend,

although i had used silicone spray on the lock as it was stiff

Get a credit card and run it down the pins, making sure all the pins depress on their springs

Fit the nav and start the bike - use the controller wheel

if it;s still not working, just hold the nav by the edge, and try and twist it slightly in the locking tabs L/R R/L

and make sure its fully located in the mount, if needs be pop the release tab and press the unit firmly in at the top

For me that worked,

Is the bike still under warrantee? if so take it back

sand papering the contacts was a bad move, contact cleaner and make sure the pins all move in the first instance.

Hi
Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it another go using your method. Unfortunately, bike now out of warranty :-(

I don't know if this is relevant for the poster. But I'll give it a shot.

My Nav VI tends to act up, and I use it on two different bikes, both with a TFT, and the behaveour is the same for both bikes.

What happens is that suddenly the navigator acts as if some invisible gnome push on the screen, and the navigator starts to jump randomly between different menues.

To make a long story short, if I wipe the screen clean, the GPS returns to normal for a few hours.

This is what I think happens:
The NAV VI is blessed with a glossy screen, like a phone. When you push the screen on the older ones (Nav V and older), you can see that the screen gives where you push. This does not happen on the NAV VI. This leads me to belive that the screen is set up with some sort of capacitive sensing, and beeing able to operate it with gloves, it must be set up to be very sensitive. Thus, a bit of dirt on the screen is interpreted as a push, and hence, the erratic behaviour. I'm not ruling out that there is something wrong with my GPS, but for now I keep watching how it behaves, and take it from there. My dealer has been informed, so I may swap it any time. But if this is how they all are, changing it will not help.

Mine has stopped working a couple of times, a bit of a spray with WD and then move the wheel around to let it soak in and that does the trick.

I had a problem with water in the nav cradle of my previous GS, which stopped the wheel working. Stripped, dried and lubed up, with a bit of grease on the seal and the wheel worked again.

Yours is a faulty unit, Garmin are aware and i believe will replace

Same problem on a 2014 with a Nav 5
Cradle and structure and jog dial all new as of Oct 2021. Still nothing
So Motoraad handballs me to Garmin
And Garmin handballed me back to Motoraad

Have you tried with a different Nav V or VI in order to eliminate that it may be a GPS issue?

A sleeping thread has been woken up again.
The last post prior to the sleep was a reply to yours truly, where I described my Nav VI issues.
In my final post I stated 'But if this is how they all are, changing it will not help.', and @Santa-25-12 replied that the unit was faulty.

What happened next was:
My GPS acted like described for a few more months until it suddenly went bonkers.
I then got a new one from the dealer.

But my last statement : 'changing it will not help' should be modified.
Changing to a new unit, it worked without issues, but back in my head I expected this to be a short lived glory before it would start acting up again.

So before I started to use the new Nav VI I masked the screen and filled the gap between the screen and housing with a sealant. Further I 3D printed a frame that would overlap the narrow gap between the screen and the housing, and it was soaked with sealant to ensure the edges of the screen would be completely sealed.

This was done two years ago, and so far the GPS has been working. But is still sensitive to dust and dirt, and needs to be wiped clean at regular intervals.

Also, in order to decide if the problem is a Ghosting issue or a cradle to GPS issue, keep in mind that if the GPS does not respond due to Ghosting, the left/right buttons still works...

When mine acted the same, it was down to water in the Nav mount. Opened it up, cleaned it out and all good.

I had my 2014 wonder wheel stop working after a year. They took the left hand handlebar control pod apart and all the contacts had gone “green”.

Everything then worked fine and has done for a few years but the problems been back for a while. If I drench everything on the handlebar in contact cleaner it works again for a little while but really I need to crack open the handlebar control box but I’m scared I’ll snap a bit of plastic and then you’re bu@@ered

A winter job for a feeling brave day 🫣

Hey Yes sorry it has been a long time between threads. In the meantime I moved countires.
So Yes I did try with different Navs and still nothing. I have an Ezcan installed and the multi controller is able to dim the lights by rotating as as expected so I have been looking for something to do with communications between the devices. If anybody has come across this I'd be grateful for any ideas. Cheers
