Hi All,

If I purchase second hand alloy panniers which include the lock barrels although coded to the original owners bike key. If they leave the locks in the open position is it possible to get the locks out without the key? Or do you need the original key to get them out?

Thanks

Mark

i cant remember if the last 'pin' that holds the lock in, is visible in both locked / unlocked positions... but cant you get the seller to just pop the barrels out whilst there with the key?

As above .... get the owner to remove the locks using his key and then tape over the lock to stop the wafers/springs falling out

Make sure the locks he supplies with the boxes are codeable. The locks on my 14my GSA couldn't be recoded (some of the earlier GSA's came like this) and I ended up having to supply new codeable locks for the new owner :blast

How do you pop the barrels out, as I need to remove them from my top box?

With the key in the barrel and the lock in the open position you will be able to see the final wafer protruding out of the barrel. If you push the wafer in with a small flat head screwdriver whilst simultaneously wriggling the key the key and barrel will come out with the key still installed. Wrap up the barrel with tape to stop the wafers/springs dropping out then remove the key from the barrel :thumby:

The only difference between the two are that the Vario locks have plastic coated ends whereas the GSA ones are metal

They are both removed in the same way

Thanks for the advice guys, the previous owner sold his bike so no longer has the keys to remove the barrels.

Thanks maek

If the last wafer isn't visible then get yourself along to your local BMW Motorrad dealer with the cases and ask them if you can try some keys from their key box. All you need is a key that will turn the barrel in the lock so the last wafer becomes visible. I did this once with some locked K1300 cases I bought and was able to unlock the cases on the seventh attempt :thumby:

It may well be that with the cases unlocked you can actually see the last wafer? It's just that it's been a while since I last removed/recoded GSA ones and I can't remember the barrel position :blast
