R1200R shock on GS?

I've recently bought a 30mm lower than standard Ohlins front shock for my '07 and want to lower the rear by the same amount but lack the funds to do it 'properly' at the moment. One option is a Hyperpro progressive spring (lowered) on the standard rear shock at £85. But I was wondering whether anyone had tried fitting an R1200R rear shock to a GS and what the effect on height was? I can pick a used one up for a similar cost to the Hyperpro spring. Have done searches on this (both R shock on a GS and GS shock on an R) but not found anything conclusive.

Get the R1200R shock anyway. It will be handy to have while you get the old GS shock rebuilt.

On my 1150 Rockster I fitted a shorter (GS) torque arm, this raised the rear end 20mm.

Can't see why the same can't be done to your 1200. Torque arm is on the top on a 1200 so shorter will lower the back end.

Shock length between the 1150 GS and the R makes quite a lot of difference in ride hight....more than I was after.
Another thing to consider is spring rate....the R is quite a lot stiffer than the GS.

No point if it doesn't fit or is a massively different length!

I'm not interested in the 1150! And I don't think it's safe to assume that the relationships between suspension components on different 1200 models is the same as on 1150s.

With reduced length/travel it would need to be - that's not necessarily a bad thing.

FWIW Wunderlich offer an adjustable torque arm that fits all 1200 models which suggests that they're all the same length:

So no height variation possible by swapping between models.

Bit harsh. Have you sat on a 1200r? It's considerably lower and neither bike has considerably changed in terms of height difference. I don't think it's safe to assume that the relationships between suspension components on different 1200 models is going to be considerably different to those on the 1150's.

Don't throw the dolly out of the pram because your not getting the answer you want.

Yes, I owned an R1200R a few years back so I'm very familiar with them. I would consider it a bit lower than a GS, not considerably, but I guess that depends upon your viewpoint.

I don't think it's safe to assume that it won't be considerably different. Designs and approaches change. Like the fact that the torque arm length varied between 1100/1150 models but doesn't on 1200 models. Anyway, height differences between GS and R aren't solely down to different suspension components. There's no room for assumption either way which is why I asked if anyone had tried it.

With that many posts to your name on this forum you think that was throwing the dolly out of the pram? I just expect that an answer to a question I ask will be vaguely relevant (or humorous), not about a completely different bike.

Why not just pop out to your local dealer with a tape measure, then you can tell us what the difference actually is. I've sat on a few R1200Rs and IMHO it is considerably lower than a GS, even with my 30" inside leg I would want a high seat option on the R.

No need to even go out of the house, I found shock specs including free length, stroke, spring rate...everything I needed (for most BM models) online.

Measure swing arm to shock mounting bolt and swing arm to wheel centre and using basic trigonometry worked out what I needed to know. Did the same for the front end.

Unfortunately I used an 1150 tape measure and trigonometric formula which as we all know are totally different to the 1200 versions. I do however have a waterproof tape measure if any one wishes to take any measurements from a new LC bike.
