Hi folks.
Not quite a GSer here, making do with the R1200ST, which, to be honest, has done me proud (along with BMW)........ untill now......
On my way home from the Ace last monday I found myself in pole position at yet another set of red lights... Pulled away in first and realised immediately all was not as it should. Revs straight up to 8K with little progression ! along with a naughty smell of burning, the cluch soon entered top of the fault list !
Took to BM, Looking at £800 for new clutch.
Now Ok, Shite happens, but after 15K miles??? Just seems very low usage to me, even more so considering 6K of those were on the motorways to Morocco when the clutch is hardly needed.
Bike is just over 2 years old and now and just out of warranty cover, so will be picking up the costs.
Just wondering what you lot thought really. Is this common to the R1200 or might I have a case here ?

Steve.

How much life should I be expecting from a clutch ? A little more than 15,000 miles I would have thought !

But you're in London where I suspect you'll use the clutch more frequently than those of us who manage to avoid the foul place!

And whilst you may be jesting, you mention 'pole position' at lights. Are you in the habit of making fast get-aways?

15k miles isn't much.

But my GS clutch went at 27k ... put down to doing lots of training miles.

Yeah fair comments. Avoid London myself, most of my miles have been done touring, spot on with the fast get aways though, although nothing i'd consider that speical. Would be shocked if thats responsible.

Still waiting for BMW UK to get back to me, hoping they will pick up some of the costs (£800), fingers crossed

Ok, Just to update:
Got the bike back today. Didn't turn out to be too painful after all.
BMW paid out for the clutch, (due to the low milage) which turns out to be the best part of £400. Cost me £380 for the labour.
Could have been far worse !

My 1150 is sitting at 77,000 original clutch and lots of abuse.

Yeah, Thats nearer to the durability i expected from BMW.
I need a reliable bit of kit for all my touring aspirations.
(previously came un-stuck with the Jap bikes)

anyways, putting down to just one of those things. at least BM forked out for some of the cost. Faith has been restored
