I have an idea to mount a small lightweight fire extinguisher to my upper engine/tank, crash bars on my 05 R12GS... Has anybody done this?

I know it adds weight :D but thinking mount 2, one on both sides... not only being more fire safe, but it'll look cool too. I can find bar mounted fire extinguishers on rally sites- but I need help...

Will the extra weight over the front end (upper tank crash bars) destroy handling?

Is my idea at all possible to technically figure out?

Don't forget your blue flashing lights, siren, and red helmet.

(You won't need a "tw@t suit")

Al

You'll need to ditch your Arai for one of these:

Fire them off whilst you ride along....a sort of poor man's nitrous booster...

Or go the whole nine yards...

hmmm good advice so far! Guess it's me on my own! I think it'd look cool- technical advice still required please :D

ok ok ... more serious answer

A lot of fire extinguishers come with wall mount brackets which I suspect you could fashion something with.

I'd check out a few caravan/camper/boat outlets as small extinguishers are usually found in those types of vehicle and will probably include some kind of safety strap on the mount as well - after all I assume you still want to ride the thing safely and not need emergency services yourself :augie

Of course if you have pannier rails then I bet you could clamp 3 on each side :bounce1

I agree you need help :blast

Yeah interesting ??? I work in the fire protection industry and although I think it's not a bad idea to carry an extinguisher in the car,I've never thought of fitting one to my beloved bike - althogh I suspect that if Touratech did them everyone would want one !!!.
If you do want one the one to get is the green Halon type which has been discontinued for public use but is still used in aviation and military applications as there is nothing with as much extinguishing power for a small size. They generally came with vehicle type brackets. I don't fancy mounting one to the front of the bike though, the rear rack or inside a topbox would be the best option. :oonyack

Daft Idea #1.

What happens when you lose one after going through a pot hole and the poor bloke behind/coming the other way gets a fire extinguisher in his face.

Carry it IN a pannier ffs.

Makes sense - that's what the Police do. But if you're determined to attach it outside the panniers, at least use a spring clip (like a grenade) to secure it in place until it's needed, but you can bet a pound to a bucket of shit, that some scrote will nick it. If you secure it with a padlock though, you won't be able to get to it in a rush - which would defeat the whole point of having it.
