Everywhere I dont really want to be...
Hi,

Can anyone tell me if they actually made an R80 GS (Not G/S)PD (Not Paris Dakar) with the 35L tank BUT with only an 800 ( or 797...) cc engine..

' cos Ive just bought one...:aidan

...To me it looks like the R100...it seems to have the 40mm Bings (I think..Im no expert...), It has the Oil Cooler. 1993 model.

It sure looks like an R100...but the Grey Paper (i.e V5 thingy used over here) says 797 cc...and it has R80 stickers on the side....

...Although I did hear from a BMW dealer that the R100 was never "holomagalized" ( Try saying that 3 times fast!)...and that all were R80's with liter engines...

Im not really that bothered...it certainly didn't feel like a slouch ...Just wonderin' thats all...

They made a Basic called a Kalahari. 800cc with the 35 litre tank but it was a 96/97 machine.

The standard r100r and GS tank is a very similar shape

what does it say on the barrels, on top, between the fins and the crankcase - 80 or 100?

I thought the steel tanks were 32 litres as per the early G/S PD mention on the www.micapeak.com site. But then the GS Kalahari says 35 litre but mention the early GS P/D s tank.

So whose right. I only have a scummy GS PD with a plastic 35 litre tank. http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...EQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNF7dxyseLf0Zgf1-yE7ECytcbWmfQ

Well this is it..

Well this is it...

The brakes are a little "soft" shall we say...but Im going to upgrade them, and the front forks are a little too bouncy...full toolkit, no rust that I could see so I went ahead. Not exactly my fav. colour but it was here in Swiss land...and the price made it favourable. Need to add single seat & rack, high front fender, TKCs etc

Take a look...I hope to pick her up either this week or next...

Ive come across this from Micapeak

"For some countries (Switzerland, South Africa,...) a R 80 GS PD was available (like the R 100 GS PD except the oil-cooler)."

...But mine has an oil cooler...could it be added after ?

same colour as my gs pd. Give us the chassis number

I missed the point earlier. Yep Standard R80PD. Looks like a nice machine. I like that colour it grows on you. Carbs are 32mm.

Fork oil should be 10W for temps above 15°C most folk seem to put 5W in which is far too light (Haynes manual getting it wrong again I think). I'd change the oil before messing with the forks too much.

Sintered pads make a big improvement to the brakes.

Don't rush into swapping the front fender. To do it right you will need the aluminium reinforcing bracket at the front bulge. The low mudguard is much better for higher speed riding.

The forks can do with a bit more rebound damping, and as the forks have the compression and rebound in different legs you can achieve that by putting 15 wt fluid in the rebound, RH side.

Most BMW forks really need the lower fork brace, and if it is there you may as well mount the mudguard on it - most of the factory PD winning bikes did.

In my experience BMW electrics are not particularly waterproof, and a decent shower of rain can cause problems even with a effective lower guard, so running with a high one doesnt really bear thinking about.

IMHO you will get the biggest bang for your buck by fitting an Ohlins shock on the rear, particularly if you plan on using it offroad, and it isnt worth fiddling with the forks until the rear is sorted, as poor fork action can be a sign of problems at the rear anyway.
