I'd like to fit a G/S sump with sump guard to my ST. I've got the sump, courtesy of the classifieds on here. I've got the old ST sump off and cleaned everything. The original ST sump is a lot deeper than the G/S one. The oil pickup dish sits very low into the original sump but I've got a much shallower one with the new sump so a straight swap I guess. My concern is the dipstick. This too protrudes deep into the original sump. New stick required or shorten the original?. How about the level marks will they still be good?
Paul.

Keep it simple and remove the guesswork. Just get a G/S dipper.

PS. Dont forget about that binnacle.....:green gri

I beleive the dipstcks would be the same length as the "extra" oil is in the extra depth. Remembering that an overfill is when there is too much in the engine not the sump.

Now that I've engaged brain of course you're right. What worried me was the dipstick appeared to be 'protruding' into the sump area quite a bit. I've just put a straight edge across the engine case bottom surface and the dipstick actually only sticks down a few millimetres. It's a bit of an optical illusion when viewed from the side. Thanks all. I'm good to go ahead with what I've got.

I've been doing some more research; it appears this is a bit of a minefield. Each sump pan has its corresponding dipstick. The ST dipstick fouls the new oil pickup pan. I'm lucky insomuch as I've got a 1981 G/S to reference. The G/S stick is shorter than the ST one and the high and low marks are higher up than the ST ones. I'll either modify my ST one to match the G/S or try and get an original shorter one.

according to Realoem the st dipstick should be the same, however the original ST dipstick was superseded so you may have an original.

on Antons site http://www.largiader.com/tech/oilpan/ the correct original dipstick should have a B on it but was superceeded by 11 43 1 338 635 MAx @ 256mm Min @ 274mm Total @ 278 "C" plastic handle, from '91 GS. Like B, but MAX is lower.

The part number corresponds to the 88GS. he has marked the high/low and total length

Hopefully it's all up and working properly now….

And I can copy your plan. :D

I've got a nice condition, vapour blasted and sump-guarded, G/S sump for the ST but didn't get any different innards. Comparing the ST and G/S fiche pictures at maxbmw it looks like it's just the main pickup 'trumpet' that differs (and the dipper). The G/S part is numbered:

11 41 1 252 223

Does that sound right? Did anything else look different?

Ta! :beerjug:

Yes, all done. The ST uses the extended oil pickup so you'll also need the shallow, steel, pickup pan. I'm not sure if the mesh and clip, are the same. My steel pan had those and I didn't compare them. You'll also need a new gasket between the pickup pan and the pickup tube and two 18mm screws. I ended up cutting my dipstick down and re-marking the levels as per the G/S marks.

Next time in at my parents I'll dig out the st dipstick and compare the two with photos. Should get rid of th guess work.

See Robs post at #11. All the info is there including photos and measurements of all the sumps and dipsticks.
