I have put a wanted advert for a spare set of wheels for my newly acquired R80G/S PD in the wanted section. Wanted are a 21" cross spoke front and a 18" three stud rear. Thanks in advance

The cross spoke fronts have a larger spindle than the G/S so unless you have changed the forks a bit of engineering will be called for.

The fronts are easy to come by on German Ebay quite cheaply , Eu250- or so , but on the odd occasion a 3 bolt rear appears they go for almost as much as a new wheel, and most will have a pretty worn brake drum by now.

Thanks for these comments. It is an '86 G/S PD mono so has a three stud rear wheel. The forks have been replaced with ones from a R100GS (?) so hence the cross spoke 21" front wheeel. The rears are rare now but hopefully someone will have one going spare????

Still looking! Best, John

Finally found a good rear and a rougher front from Germany. The front needs new spokes (rusty) . Can I change one at a time or do I need to send the wheel off to a wheel man (Hagons is near to me)? Apparently it is really difficult to true up these 21" cross spoke wheels.

In my experience it wasent that hard to get the spokes in , finger tight, and the rim sitting straight and true.

The problems started when I tried to torque up the spokes - the rim responds seemingly at random, and nothing I have learnt from building a fair few stock spoked wheels helped.

I stopped immediatly in case I twisted the rim.

Luckily my local wheel worksbuilder has the equipment to work with these things and he was able to complete the build for me, and the work I had done cut the cost in half , as removing the spokes is also a pig of a job.
