I would like an 80G/S but I dont want anything too posh to actually get dirty on a regular basis.
(They are allegedly a bit lighter, and I'm into classic and vintage bikes)
So... what's the deal with dressing up an ST with some GS gear ?
This one seems quite suitable for example, as its not been extensively repainted, and it even has some reasonable tyres, and is the right kind of budget to get approved: https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1240167

JTR has advertised them from time to time, but I think it would be nicer to know exactly what work has been done.

That one looks like a straight ST to me that someone's had a go at refurbishing, seems a reasonable price depending on what's been done. Maybe email the seller. G/Sing it is usually purely cosmetic, quite like the ST look myself.

Well, yes, a G/S isnt that different to an ST if you ignore the front wheel after all. They definitely have an 'interim' look before the next set of styling.

Anyway - my point was really about actually getting an ST dirty on a Green Road.
The tyres are easy,
a sumpguard is essential but easy
handguards are essential but easy
but what about suspension - does the G/S have more travel and if so how?
and ground clearance - is that about the suspension?
and a bigger front wheel - is that simple or part of getting more ground clearance, and only needed for serious lanes ?
(Yes, I ride serious lanes)

That ST has been for sale for a LONG time (he even tried to sell it on here)
It’s not a standard ST: wrong front mudguard (a G/S high mudguard turn back to front and mounted low), and the wrong left side panel, and the missing silencer heat shield....
The seller either doesn’t know this, or is trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes, as I questioned him about the wrong & missing parts and he denied it all.

The ST shown on car n Classic looks okay if you ignore the wrong bits, but he is asking FAR too much for a bike that is not standard. I would wonder how much work has been done, and who did it.

The ST has different front forks to the g/s, and shorter rear shock, so the extra ground clearance on a g/s comes from the different front forks, the 21 inch wheel, and the longer rear shock.
The ST also has a different front brake to the g/s, so it’s not a straight swop to fit the g/s forks and wheel unless you also get the brake caliper for the g/s.
the St also has a different sump to the g/s, so the g/s sump guard doesn’t fit..... but I recon it would be possible to get a sum- guard fitted somehow.

But after saying all that...... many ST’s have been turned into g/s replica’s ..... or even full off road beasts..... the only thing stopping you doing it are the cost of parts if you can find them.

Good luck with your search.... there are cheap (ish) ST’s out there, but the one you linked to I would stay clear of only due to the price and how the seller reacted to my questions when I first saw it for sale (many months ago.... at least 6 !)

Just checked car and classic again....... if you scroll down, there is a far cheaper, and far more original ST for sale. (At a dealership, so some comeback if it blows up in the first 100 miles!.....unlikely I know)

The second one would be the one I’d go for..... not the bitsa.

Good luck with your search

If you want to do it properly, those chrome engine bars would need to be black (easy) and the twin clock set up would need swapping for the single clock binnacle (expensive).

When I converted my ST to G/S looks I used a 21” G/S front wheel and the calliper etc fitted without any trouble both hubs are the same unlike the GS which has a different calliper. I fitted a YSS G/S length shock and had the centre stand lengthened to suit.
I used a G/S sump, bash plate and oil pick up. The ST forks are roughly the same length but the ST uses a straight leg whilst the G/S has a forward axle. Steering is slightly quicker as a consequence with the ST forks.
