I'm considering buying an R80st of 1983 vintage in very tidy condition showing around 42,000 mls on speedo. Would appreciate any input regarding anything I should look for on such a machine before parting with any cash and what I could expect to pay. My experience with these bikes is very limited so any info helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hi Hairy,
You should have told me in the pub Thursday, I've got one, their great, but mines not very tidy.
Give me a ring and I'll tell you all about them,
Paul.

I had one in the 80s for 4 years and 50,000 miles - HPP 499Y . Great bike and from memory..... The bad: Exhaust will rot, but most will have been replaced long ago; gearbox/ clutch seal will leak; centre stand pivots wear out - both wheels will touch the ground when on the stand; speedo leaks around the trip reset button; switches get sticky; carb diaphragms prone to splitting. Uncomfortable seat; needs a screen.

The good: good paint and finish; good tank range; easy service; good riding position; decent handling for its time; will run at 80ish all day, day after day.

I liked mine a lot. I Traded it in against a K100RS and after a week or two wished I hadn't. I would have another if I saw the right one.

Get it brought

If its been looked after and kept original - get it paid for :thumb2

Great Bike!

Someone booked on my Germany trip in Aug coming on one, as well as someone on an r100gs - thinking of using my 80gs for this one!

Good luck with it if you do buy!

These are the same as other airheads as regards pro's & con's. Things like saddles and screens are a personal thing so you may not
need these on an ST. In their day, it was said they were the best handling airhead. They were also less common that other airhead
models so you don't see many of them around these days. Another plus is that nearly everything is still available for the old airheads
either from BMW itself or independents like Motorworks and Moto-bins. Nice bike too !
At present, I own three airheads. This, after selling 3 oilheads (great bikes). I use the airheads for travelling abroad, 2 up and they
have never left me down. They are a joy to own (in my opinion/experience) and are very easy to work on.

Hi. I am going to Germany on mine in August, so probably me referred to earlier. I have owned mine since last Summer and can't stay off it. Great bike and joy to own and ride. So far, 3000 miles behind me and never missed a beat. Pictures of mine in the ST section. Good luck with your buy.

Cheers

As said above, really easy to ride, easy to work on, Motorworks, MotoBins, some of the German sites for just about every spare part. I bought one less than 1 year old back in 1984, ran it for a few years, sold it, always regretted that decision, bought another 4-5 years ago as a project and the finished pictures are in the 'Show Us Your ST' page.

There was one advertised in OBM a few weeks ago, Devon way I seem to remember.

Its like riding a moped after the 1200RT:D

HairySteve - Did you buy it?

Just check the rear wheel lining have not worn out and gone oval.
There are no more wheels about with the 3 boltholes as per g/s80 and ST
great bikes

Thanks to everyone for their comments however I decided not to buy it in the end. Not sure if it's still available but I do have the chaps phone no if anyone else is interested in following it up. Bike is located in Nottingham.
