I am just about to assemble my headstock triple clamps into my restored frame and at present I am unsure of the assemly order.
I have just pressed the two new shells into the top and bottom of the headstock and I am wondering if there should be a lower dust cap under the inner race or does the race rest directly on the bottom triple clamp. In my Clymer manual no dust cap is shown but Motobins list a shallow dished washer.
I just seem to have a recollection that a washer should be there but I cannot find one in my parts boxes. so help please from you knowledgable guys

There should be a dust cap under there Byron. It fits under the bearing so needs to go on first. It's a sacrificial aluminium cover if you buy the original.

Thanks for that Rob as I did not remove the bearings myself, but gave the frame and headstock to CW BMW my local dealer to do the job

I had to get one. I think it's BMW part:

Top Tosser - so to speak

Just thought that I would drop the inner bearing race on to the stem this morning. Sadly all was going so well - freeze lower triple clamp, warm inner race , but whilst juggling with it at 230c in my gardening gloves on the kitchen floor it slipped on inverted. Then Massive swearing session as it chills. So out with the grinder chisels and punches and back to square one. Anyway 2 hours later job done!!!

I find anything involving freezers or ovens is too distracting, with all their lovely food associations :fnikefork:D

At last some headway

I have managed to fix the vin plate with the rivets to the headstock- I knew there would eventually be a use for that old rivet set and snap. The steering lock cover kit from Motobins did not have the groove machined on the underside , so that small nipple was filed away.
Anyway it works a treat now.:clap
