R90S starter isssue

On the way back from a run today the starter on the 90S wouldn't turn the engine. The motor was spinning ok but making a scraping type noise. Had to be push started by my old mate Roger and managed to get home ok. Off with the starter cover and find that the two main bolts securing the (Bosch) motor have come loose and one had fallen out completely! Found all the bits fortunately!

Was tempted just to bolt everything up again but thought I'd check the number of teeth on the starter. It has NINE teeth!

Mine is an early bike manufactured in March 1974 which should surely have an EIGHT tooth starter. Now I'm aware that the early ones had an issue with weak flywheel bolts and I'm wondering if the flywheel has been replaced at some time for a later one. Would this be possible? It's of course a heavy flywheel engine.
Prior to the starter working loose the engine would turn over sweetly, with no unusual noises. So I'm wondering if this is the correct starter for the flywheel. There doesn't seem to be undue wear to the flywheel teeth.

The flywheels of course have differing numbers of teeth for eight and nine teeth starters therefore is it in any way possible to find out which variant it is without removing the gearbox?

On looking again at the flywheel teeth the leading edge of each is worn/chipped so consistently that it appears normal! Might this have been caused by the "wrong" starter? Or wouldn't a nine-tooth starter turn an eight-tooth flywheel anyway? Looks like I might be changing the flywheel this winter!
