My life is evolving and in the near future I will have a long commute on the road to hell.

This road VERY frequently has accidents and long delays.

So the holy grail, rocking horse poo, hen's teeth, chicken lips that I'm looking for is a radio that is only triggered by the traffic announcements.

I don't much like listening to music when I'm riding but it would be great to have the useful info so I can plan a detour before I hit the blockage.

Connections aren't a problem as I can wire it through an inta-ride system or direct to my earplugs.

Failing that, does anyone know of a good all-weather solution so I can easily turn the volume up/down manually?

I know that some of the car radios let you set different volumes for music/traffic announcements but I've never seen these features in a portable radio.

So what should I use?

What you need is a portable RDS radio with a TA/TP function i.e. one which you can set on zero volume but that will restore itself to normal volume for traffic programs - just like any in-car RDS radio will do. I remember looking for the exact same thing a couple of years back and I never did find one. And the trouble now is RDS is so last-year, all development work in portable radios is going into producing DAB units. Unfortunately DAB doesn't provide the same traffic announcement facility.

Thinking laterally what you really need is a bike mounted Trafficmaster unit. Or if you have a smartphone, mount it on your handlebars and use Traffic-i - http://www.filesaveas.com/traffici.html

Thanks Cheesy - that's perfect! I have a p800 so this should work for me. Have you used the Traffic-i?
No, I just remember reading about it when I was looking for a solution.

You could also consider a Garmin 2720, a GPS with traffic data. That would have the double benefit of calculating a route for you which isn't congested...

Sounds like a good idea until you look at the cost :yikes just shy of £1000

Again, have you used the traffic data feature and does it work well?

I should admit that I have been considering upgrading my streetpilot III but was thinking of picking up a used 2610 now that people will be upgrading to the 2720...
