After 4 days in the rain:blast, my 1995 1100 gs, lost the god given right to sparks at the plugs & left me stranded coming home from Scotland.:eek:onyack with the ignition on, but not attempting to start, I noticed the rev counter needle bouncing, & noise coming from the left hand side of the engine,( between tank & starter)
This sounded like, Arcing, or possibly a Relay attempting to switch.:tears This happened before, comeing back from Amsterdam:cool:, again in the rain.
So either my GS just doesn't like going home:thumb2, or its water ingress,
But to what & why? Any help greatly appreciated
BLOODY FING

Thanks for the double quick response mate.I thought that the first time it happend, but it started again, & now its home this time, its started again, first time, on the button. Is that still hall censor? Or poss' water in its conector?:bow

The arcing/crackling sound and rev counter needle are the signs of hall sensor trouble - As is the failing and then working.

Clean the connector from the sensor, then run the bike until it's hot, don't drive far just keep going around the block for half hour and see if it fails again.

One of the symptoms is failing and then starting again once the bike has cooled down. And the running periods get shorter and shorter inbetween failing.

Cheers mate, I'll give that a go.:thumb2 The beers are on me if ever we meet:hug

The Hall Sensor failure seems to crop up regularly. Do 1150s have them also and if so where are they located?

Just want to be prepared in case mine ever suffers the same fate.

They do have them, they do fail, and they are in the same location as the 1100.

I carry a spare when on the road.

If it's any consolation, exactly the same thing happened to me. My bike was trailered home twice in the UK. BWM couldn't find a fault. Then it went again in Austria.:( Trailered home again and traded in for spoiling the holiday. Now I know what it is I really regret that...

two more questions,
will there be signs of wear, which would show it's shagged?
how does it work? I'm assuming, some sort of timing pick up, like electronic ignition on a car.
If anyones got any plumbing, or heating problems, dont hesitate to ask,
(i fell like a right ponce, keep asking all these questions, but it is bloody handy though)
Cheers all
