I am organising this years Royal British Legion Rider's Branch Saddlesore/Iron Butt. The requirements are pretty straightforward. You ride 1000 miles in 24 hours or less and raise a minimum of £50 for the Poppy Appeal. I did it last year and it was fairly challenging but very do-able and the GS is pretty well the perfect bike for it. You can register at www.rblr1000.co.uk. It is a sanctioned Iron Butt event and it is for a very good cause. Riders can set off from 0530 hours from Squires Cafe in Leeds. Camping is available and free. it is definitely an adventure and an event. Last year a few guys from this forum did it. You do not need any HM Forces links to do it nor do you have to be a member of the RBLR.

It is an enjoyable but arduous ride but for a good cause. The Northern route is through the Highlands and is a pretty special sight. It is stretching for experienced mile munchers but I would not recommend it for the less than seasoned rider

I'd be in for Southern Anti clockwise route... Goes past Chez-Nous at about the right point for a quick kip on the way back North from London !!

Go on then, I'm up for it:thumb2

I'm sick of finding excuses not to ride the bike and any cause doesn't get much better than this one.

Who's going to sponsor me then?:bounce1

Well done - I hope to see you there. I would think carefully about kipping chez vous - other guys found themselves velcroed to their beds. Going at a steady pace with well placed short breaks means you should do it in around 18 hours, which is no massive hardship. For me the hardship would be dragging myself away from a warm bed, but you can do it. I just wouldn't. If you detour, get out of your kit, shut your road riding brain down and get two hours sleep you will be cutting it mighty fine.
The Highlands route gives you more light, more midges and more kamikaze deer - as well as some of the most breathtakingly beautiful roads, with hardly any traffic. The ride turns round at Wick, just shy of John O'Groats and the A9 gets a bit, well, rough that far North.
It is a really friendly event and gives a real sense of achievement once you have done it. It is now part of my annual riding calendar.

Thanks for the tips Andrew. Points noted. I wasn't thinking of making it anymore than a power nap chez-nous... A decent cup of tea, a quick wash of the face, a brush of the teeth and a brief power nap has always worked wonders on my previous long hauls...

Only if you come upto John O'groats with me:flag

I'm open to influence !! Always been easily led astray !!

I just wondered whether average speeds might be higher on the southern run. I'd be wanting to take photos on the northern run round every bend !!

If you don't get any other buddies going north I'd be happy to reconsider...

If you haven't been up there yet then it's a must, try to make it to the Gathering of the Clans in Ullerpool for a taster:thumb2

I agree the Southern route looks faster but nowhere near as scenic and far too much traffic down there for me;)

The southern riders were a bit quicker last year. As to power naps etc it is horses for courses. I cannot switch my riding head off! I will be checking the weather because you can change your mind up to the start point. If it is wet in Scotland, I'm off to Cornwall!

That's a great suggestion - if they'd let me in...

I signed up for this a few weeks ago, and have tried to raise some awareness/money where I work :augie

Looking forward to it. I also attended an IBA meet last month, and they were a very friendly and committed bunch of riders.
