I am new to this technology. I appear not to be able to create a' turn by turn' route using above software in Ireland. I can make a route as the crow flies but we don't have roads like that yet!
If I had newer version 7, does it do' turn by turn' routing in Ireland?

 :(

I'm no expert, but from what I understand it the routing for Ireland is poor the only map that is reasonable is the Garmin world map.

i am in ireland and i find it almost impossible to find anything,if i search for tullamoreit doesnt exist yet i can see it in the map, anyone explain that to me.....by the way you can download mapsource ver 6.5 from the garmin site:)

As yer man says, coverage in Ireland isn't good so this will be part of your problem. You can upgrade via Garmin.com but you have to pay about $100. It would be worth checking with 'Richie' who is a regular GPS user and he's just moved over to Ireland from Belgium. He can tell you how bad the coverage and maps are for Ireland compared to what he's used to.

The fact that you can see something in the map but can't search and find it isn't so strange - it's a mapsource problem. Strangely if you search through your GPS unit you may well get a hit on the search which you don't get on the PC. Try it - you may be surprised.

Mapping of Ireland is poor even on V7, Its the worst mapping of any EU country, this is not a garmin issue its an Irish mapping issue.

In mapsource, goto edit/preferences/aoutorouting, then check the fastest or shortest route boxes, my guess is you have the direct route ticked

I think you mean City Navigator V4 or City Select V4 rather than MapSource V4.

Mapsource is the software which makes the system run, CN or CS is the mapping bit...

Just to try it, I've just created a route, using v4.01 City Navigator, coming out of the centre of Belfast into the countryside. Seems to work OK.
