My photographer is giving me some family pics on a cd rom. He tells me they are read only and we will not be able to print from it / them. Is there any way of getting around this ???

The usual way is to pay the Photographer a ridiculous amount to get the unprotected copy of the CD, or the prints. It's pretty standard of photographers to do this as with technology getting cheaper there making less money, there would be some programme for "cracking" the copyright protection but it'll either cost you, be riddled with spyware, or both, someone else maybe know of something but i doubt it.

I have paid him a small fortune for his work and the prints. I'm very happy with both and dont begrudge him a cent. He did a fantastic job. But I would like to make copies for my parents etc without it costing millions of euro 
.

Most photographers worth there salt will put a copyright logo right across the middle of the pictures to protect them as well. However if the pictures are un copyrighted you could try to capture them, if you have a decent tool such as paintshop pro this will do it or download a freeware tool such as MWSnap. This will allow you capture an area of what appears on the screen ie the photo and save it. This will be printable the quality wil not be as good as the original but should be passable for smaller prints.....hope that helps you.

Last time I looked, I could copy 'read only' files to my HDD and change them in the 'properties', though as Fanum points out (rather guiltily it seems
) it's a form of theft. Would this photographer agree to you making a copy or two if you asked him nicely ?

Kenny is the man ! I have paid the photographer €2000 for his time and the prints. He is a great photograher but I feel he has been well remunerated for his 90 minutes work. Thats why I wont pay him any more for more prints.
