Dear all,

Whilst cogitating today, I had a genius idea.

Has anyone ever drilled and tapped the final drive for a drain point ?

Bit like the early/later ones have but I don't !

Any rational yes/no/what have you been smoking answers appreciated.

Because, bmw didn't fit one, in their infinite wisdom, my R and RT have them which makes it easier to change fd oil. I'm just curious if it is doable or another one of my 'brilliant' ideas.

I think if it had been practical someone on here would have done it by now. Just my tuppence worth.

Couple of guys in the states did it but it wasn't easy. Everything was stripped and they had to weld in material so they got a decent thread for the plug.

There's a good reason to NOT use the drain plug.
The paralever bearing and rear UJ move through a narrow angle. The grease can't recirculate as it would in a rolling bearing so the rollers rub dry and get flat spotted.
Tipping the UJ back to drain oil spreads grease around the bearing. It's also easy to do the same with the UJ.

That's why the next time I change the oil I will do it that way rather than use the drain plug.

At every FD oil change i drop the FD down anyway to check the Prop shaft, gaiter and grease the splines.

I havent done this yet but im going to do it before season starts. I already have all the proper grease as recommended by Bendy.

Good idea but the casting is too thin to thread a bolt into it
