I know there has been a lot written about the chocolate digestive rear brake disk. I have been told today that mine is fecked at 16k miles. I was quoted £156 for a new one - fitting not included!:censor::censor::censor:
Has anyone had any luck fighting for a contribution from Bm at this sort of mileage?
Bike has to go back for a new rear shock and also the fuel level sensor (replaced today but still faulty!) I have the extended waranty that will take care of these but not the disk - so I am told.

I think the typical BM dealer is a bit conservative with disk wear. Mine was aparrently shagged at 18k but still fine according to my highly trusted independent

Have a look at steptoes website. www.gsshop.biz He had some rear discs for the 1200GS at about half the price. ask him for some Ferodo Platinum (or is that Diamond?) pads to go with it.

My first rear dick was condemned at 18K. I left it on there till 31K then replaced it with an EBC cast iron jobbie. Awfull thing, but couldn't get anything else at the time :blast

I've had an EBC 'cast iron jobby' on for the past 40,000 miles. Not yet down to min thickness, so probably the best £60 Ive spent on my bike.

ive got a brand new genuine Bmw rear disc still in the box i was keeping it just in case, but its not needed really ill happily sell it you, send me a pm and we can talk wonga.

i had the used bike warranty and they said the same to me, binding calipers are a factor in it overheating and I guess they know this.

i got mine from James Sherlock about £65, takes under an hour to do, handy to have a long reach torx key to get to the disc screws
 
Mine was well shafted and past the limit so I replaced with an EBC and platinum pads. They last much better than stock and were half the price

I've never had a problem with binding pads but you do need to keep an eye out for wear in the splines in the disk carrier on early 1200's and also that there's no movement in the disk when supposedly bolted up tight.

The linked brakes seem to favour the rear too heavily for my liking and whatever combination of pads/disks they used around 2007/8 seemed to wear very fast
 
I managed 6000 miles before BMW recomended replacing the disk (I think they have a wear tolerance of about 0.4mm).

I still have the same disk and am now on 28 000 miles and have been through about 5 sets of pads (linked brakes and only city riding) I am planning to change it with the next set of pads as it is worn.

What is the minimum thickness on a BMW disk that "independants" suggest?
