I haven't looked into this to much, but you can get banjo bolts with the switch included, with no moving parts exposed to the elements, and they aren't a great deal bigger than the bolt they replace.

Just been upside down in the garage looking at Jills 2001 brake light switch. Yours looks very similar, but short of removing the foot rest I couldn't say hand on heart it is identicle.

Why do BMW, who build fantastic bikes, go and spoil them by cutting corners and putting crap on them like your standard brake switch? The chain guide on my XChallenge is just as rubbish...

LTP, there is a newer design now available which has a tail of cable pre-moulded in to the banjo bolt and is totally waterproof. the cable is of a length that enable the connection high up towards the seat thus keeping it a dry as possible.
OK, these maybe tricky to fit if looms don't allow the connection position to be moved, but on new enduro bike road legalising projects, they are the mutts nutz.
