rear brake pads(r1200gsa)

Is it just me or does anyone else use rear brake pads every 8000 miles. I dont ride hard and as i'm old i don't use brakes that much, i'm still on same front ones that came on bike and have done 16000 plus miles and only just over half worn. Garage say nothing wrong not unusual etc. Any suggestions?

I guess I'm on 4th set of rear pads and second rear disk but same fronts.

They do go through rear brake pads. If you use BMW`s own, you might want to change to something a bit harder.

Consider yourself lucky if your getting 8000miles, my first set lasted 1800miles (and no I don't use it as I can't reach the bloody pedal it so low!) You can get HH's of Ebay alot quicker than steptoe will reply to a PM

Been through sets in 4k!! Swapped to EBc and they last lots longer.

I've got a 08 GS with 13,600 miles on clock, still on original pads front and rear with plenty of meat left on them. I do not hang around and over the last 12 months have done most of those miles in the company of Micky. One thing I can say about Micky, for those of you who have been on one of his advanced training coarses. He teaches you to be in the right gear at the right time and in doing so it is suprising how little you use your brakes.

So are you saying it's rider error that the rear pads don't last long? unless my riding style has changed dramatically I have never worn down rear pads on a bike until I got the GS, once again I have trouble using the rear brake as the position of the rear lever is too low. Front pads are on 15k and about half worn. first set of pads lasted 1800miles with no bluing of the disc indicating something was stuck on. Linked servo'd brakes are the cause, nothing to do with riding technique

Thank you all for answers. Not just me then. I have one mate with just a gs and he has 14000 miles on and plenty left on his too. I was same pre GS don't think i ever wore back brake pads out and got 25000 plus on fronts.

The original pads were organic, they are now specified as sintered.

I have an aftermarket galfer wavy rear disk and EBC HH Sintered pads, the rear brake is now hardly wearing at all unlike the original crap pads and chocolate brake disk.

I've got standard rear discs for the 1200 in stock ( out of wavy discs at the moment). I can do you a disc and pads (ferodo platinum) for £85 plus postage.

Thats a good deal, I paid £100 plus P&P from Nippy Normans just for the disk alone. The pads were a further £18 plus postage.

Just been browsing through the forum and find a load of problems just like mine. I've got a 08 1200gsa less than a year old 13k on the clock and just got it back from a 12k service at rainbow. I was told that the the rear pads were completely worn and that the rear disk was now out of spec. I was dumbstruck to say the least, I would have expected the disk to last longer than the pads. My previous K11rs did over 79K on its original disks with the pads lasting about 15k.

I can see the argument for no asbestos etc but you should expect better mileage from the disks.
Do new bmw car disks need replacing at 12k? don't think so

The bike still has a years warranty on it so I suppose i'm stuck with bmw parts and the costs

I've had my grumble and i'm sorry for jumping in on someone elses thread but its all the same topic

My previous non abs 1200 needed new pads after 19.5k - I used the back brake all the time. Interesting to see how the new machines pads last given that its got ABS (and therefore linked brakes)

You've hit the nail on the head - linked brakes - that's what does the rear pads in!

I've just chopped my 06 with 48,000miles and replaced the rear pads only once. My pal, who has an ABS equipped bike, gets through rear pads like there's no tomorrow.
