Went to buy a set or rear brake pads for my 1200GSA and was offered two types. a sintered metal pad (for off road use) and the standard organic material pad

Has anybody used the sintered pads on the road, do they last longer than the standard pad (just short of 6000mls and a bout 1mm left)

I was never offered the sintered pads on my standard 1200GS's, is it new for the GSA :nenau

I'm giving Ferodo's a go this time

I have just ordered Ferodo rear pads (from Motorworks.co.uk) as replacements for the EBC's. I'm hoping they will last longer that 4-5K miles I currently get. It didn't say wether they were sintered or not, but the pad material was a different colour to the EBC pads. If the Ferodo pads are harder and wear the disk quicker, so be it.

I think there is a design flaw that allows brake pads to wear out in fewer miles than the service intervals. I'm sure some people never check pad wear expecting it to be done at service time.

according to the specs page on the 2007 manual the pads at the rear are organic and the ones on the front are sintered...no clue as to why.

Yes there is. Dry weather on paved roads and 20000 km is no problem for the rear pads. Rain on gravel roads kan wear down new pads in about 1000 km!

The problem is the integral brakes in combination with the small holes in the rear disc. The holes fills up with clay/sand and this grinds down the pads unbeleivable fast. There is no way to avoid using the rear brakes!

Offroad bikes typically have much larger holes in the discs and dirt doesn't seem to build up in those rotors.

For some reason this is only an issue for the rear brake. I've never seen dirt build up in the holes of the front wheel rotors.

I've just fitted Carbon lorain sinterd pads to the rear of my 12, EBC don't supply the sintered pads for the rear any more so I was told by Nippy Norman.

The sinterd pads have a little more feel than the standerd ones had IMO But with ABS the rear break on the 12 feels very vague anyway so it's hard to tell.

In my experiance I always fit sintered pads front and rear to any bike I have as I preffer the better more positve feel they give as well as the improved breaking ability.

I also think that the supposed increased disc ware is much less than roumerd, as I never had to replace a disc because of ware when I did courrier work, covering over 250'000 miles between two bikes in the early 90's when sintered pads first became available. I've also never fitted EBC pads to any bike I've had since 'if I could avoid it' either, as I considered them to be too hard and very ineficient. I'll always look for other makes first.
