Rear brake pads

Took off the GS's wheels for new tyres at National Tyres and noticed some grooves in my near new rear disk. Checked my brake pads to find there was one once apon a time and now all that is left if the essence of brake pad. The left side still had a few mm's but the right had GONE!

Bit annoyed at Rainbow as it wasnt a long time (bout a month) since they put on the new rear disk on and they should have checked the pads for several reasons and hopefully they could have given me advice. Still new pads are now on and ive checked the pistons. They seemed find but I greased them up anyways just in case the uneven wear was caused by them.

You guys probably already know but as it happens BMW have now it seems modified thier pads so that the right is deeper so they are taking notice that this is a common issue.

They've been made like that for a few years - Including all the aftermarket pads that fit the rear. I'd imagine the ones that have worn out on your bike were like that to start with. But they still wear out unevenly.

It's normal practise to fit new pads when you have a new disc ?? As the disc isn't being worn to the old pads, which will be uneven and grooved.

I agree with Steptoe, even though the outer pad is thicker it still wears faster than the thinner inner pad with the wear indicators on.

My sentiment exactly. I wonder why Rainbow didnt do this for me! It would have been a opportunity for them to offer me a better service and also take a few quid from me as well!

From now on I think ill back up all my dealer services with my own checkovers.

No expert here....but check your dealer receipt and see if they did put new pads in. I believe as the others have said it is regarded as common practise to fit new pads with a disk change and I have always been asked if I want this and think the manuals even recommend it. If the dealer did not replace the pads at the time of the disk change then have a moan and show them the damage to the disc...you never know you may be surprised and get a new or discounted replacement disk.

I tackled them about this and they said that BMW warranty doesnt cover brake pads so they wouldnt fit them. My big problem with this statement is they are saying that it doesnt need doing because it wont get done for free.

Im not homeless or poor so im sure the cost of a set of brake pads isnt beyond me so if they had mentioned that I would have put CC to table and sorted it then before it became dangerous.

The disk isnt badly damaged, just a little rougher to touch than the other side. I believe I caught it just in time and as I dont use my rear brake that much it wasnt too serious but for another person it could have been seriously dangerous.

Moral of this story... DONT rely on your dealer to look after your bike 100% and no matter what your level of expertise, still check over the bike and your likely to spot something wrong even if you dont understand it.

To my mind, they should off said to you that they would replace the disk BUT it will require a new set of pads which were chargeable.. the dealer is giving you BS. In my book if they at leased never asked you about needing replacement pads then the damage is down to them as they shouldn't have fitted the disk.

i have heard of people having to make a contribution to the cost of pads if they are mostly worn out (this is in the car world).

otherwise, it's a bit like giving you a new engine with the old oil in it

Had another discussion about this today with one of the lads at Rainbow so ill see where it goes from here.

Apparently some bearings in my swinging arm are buggered too so they need doing pretty soon although im a little worried about using the bike between now and when im booked in for. Dont want my back wheel locking up on me and as I use it for commuting mostly ill probably add some more wear in no time.

The result: NOTHING.

Never mind, thats what I expected. And the bearings, I had to pay for. Turned from £90 to £130 which I didnt expect but I dont have enough energy to waste about argueing. If only I know what to do I would have done it myself.

I would be interested to hear if people would replace them if they were just worn? Was it necessary for them to be replaced or have I just had unnecessary work done for no reason!?

If they go again I think ill do it myself however hard it may be, Ive gotta learn sometime.

TBH, getting rid of the bike has also crossed my mind. Not that I want to but im considering if I actually need the bike considering how much hassle it has been causing me in the short time ive owned it. I guess the thought that BMWs are all reliable is a vague one.

Ironically my half the price Jap bike hasnt cost me a penny apart from servicing and modifications.
