I’ve always found rear brake on my Xcountry to have very little feel. It’s either on or off with not much in between. The contrast is my f650 Dakar which has the finest feeling controllable back brake. The x is designed to have zero ‘give’ and is quite wooden in feel.
Perhaps inmates have something that feels better? Dakar has longer brake pedal.? Perhaps a softer pad set up?

When I was riding Dakar , the brake was so good I used it plenty, especially good on corners and slippy conditions, it gave great confidence and control. In the process of refining Xcountry on wee niggles!

May be down to the pads you've got fitted, both in terms of type and quality?

Dirt or grime on the disc may also contribute to poor performance.

Organic pads may brake better than sintered in some circs, but will often wear out quicker.

I may have just got used to what those on my xchallenge do but seem to think it's okay

Always worth trying different pads.
I think the fact that there is very little travel distance between on and off is part of it . Only actually a few millimetres once you pass the play. . I’ll check pads, I know they are brembo. With the bike being so much lighter than Dakar it doesn’t need as strong a brake. Keep the ideas coming.

The other variable is the master cylinder piston size, a smaller dia piston will give more feel, need more effort, but that'll require some research to find out OE piston size and if any smaller ones are available that have the same fitment.

Just removed pads , rear from my Dakar F650gs. They are Goldfren KBA 60878 HH, stamped on back, best back brake ever had. All I can find are ceramic carbon versions AD? Not HH . They may be 10-15 years old. 023 appears to reference size/shape on type no. Can anyone enlighten me?
Would love to buy originals
