Is it possible for a mere mortal with a handful of basic tools to change the rear diff oil on a 2006 1200 GSA? I've seen a YouTube style video of a couple of our American friends doing the job with consummate ease but I cannot seem to find a drain plug?

(sorry Toad I know I'm talking about oil here, I promise I looked but couldn't find the link thing in the useful links!)

Is the official BMW line still that this unit is 'sealed for life' or do they now recomend changing the oil? If so, what intervals do they recomend changing the oil?

Top stuff, thank you, will attempt this deed over the weekend, looks like something I should be able to do without breaking too much!

Hi Wile E C - pretty easy job, the only thing that I would say is get hold of the proper o rings for the speed sensor. I used a near match from my pile, and ended up with a slight mist on the diff. The Wonderfull James Sherlock stocks them, and can arrange deilvery before you've put the phone down (nearly) regards dp:pullface

I agree

I agree with the above, I would certainly change the oil in the rear diff every 24k if not every 12k and I use a normal gear oil which has been working fine for every other final drive that I know and is working fine on mine, heh but thats a whole can of worms what oil should I put in there.

Sit back and watch them bite..............

FD Oil change

A well known gentleman from Sleaford says change gearbox and final drive oil every time you change the engine oil and just use good quality GL5.

cheers,
