I had the 18k service done at Bahnstormer today on my GSA TC: they measured the rear disc at 4.57mm which is close to the limit. The bike has 19k miles, I never changed the rear disc on any previous bikes for at least double the mileage. The cost to replace disc + pads at BMW is almost £300.

Any thoughts / similar experiences? The rear pads are almost worn out but not enough to ruin the disc so I have no idea what has happened.

They also found a potential leak from the gearbox and a deep cut on my new Anakee 3, definitely not a lucky day!!! :blast

I thought the TC was reliable.... :nenau

Too much braking :) my rear lasted to 42 thou, will be changing it myself, far cheaper especially as not much more 5 bolts, but then have to do front ones as well.

I have a loose front disc on my 60,000k '08 GSA. BMW suggested changing the disc when I have it fixed as it's near to tolerance. 'Tolerance' I assume means it can be hammered to the limits the bike can be ridden at without failing and even then it prolly has a safety margin added. I will keep an eye on wear but as my riding style doesn't involve much braking I have no plans to change it any time soon. Regarding your pads chewing their way merrily through the disc is it heavy use and an aggressive compound in the pads as it does appear a bit premature.

Mine was shot at 30k.

Bought aftermarket disc and pads from Sherlock's for just over £110 and did the job myself - it is not difficult and took me less than an hour.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to look for a second opinion before replacing it. You never know...

I was told that mine was at the limit at 18k service as well. I complained and said that it was not acceptable. the Service manager then changed his tune and said that the Mechanic was a bit over-enthusiastic. Sold the bike at 25k and it passed 2 mots after that warning. I still had all original pads and disks. I believe this is just a little money-spinner. I also think the rear disk wears quicker with new pads and then settles down to a slower rate of wear when the pads and disk are worn in.

All dealers will let you know when things are getting near a certain level and I guess it's how they tell you which is important. Brakes are one of those things where they will let you know it good time I guess.

I would get new pads on if they are worn and just crack on. If you are worried at all, have a run into an independent such as Steptoe or ABW etc to get them to have a look. I would also buy my pads and disc from Steptoe as his kit is spot on:thumb

The bike's a Twin Cam so obviously not that old, may I enquire what make of pads you are using?

I had understood that the discs last three times the pads (I could well be way out on that) but assuming pads go for no more than 6,000 miles 18K for the disc could be considered reasonable?

I digress, I'd be far more worried about the leak from the gearbox, I just hate seeing these bikes cracked in half.

EBC and Brembo rear discs are about £65 on ebay. EBC sintered pads about £20. eBay is supposed to be fussy about adverts so presumably they are genuine.

I went to Park Lane this morning: "Your disc is absolutely fine, sir. 4.62mm. You just need to change the pads."

The current pads are still the original ones, not sure which brand. Anyway good to see two dealers with different opinions and over £200 saving in between.

The gearbox leak is a different story and definitely more serious. I'll keep an eye and if it gets worse I'll need the get the bike opened I'm afraid.

Or I could swap it with this one maybe? ;)

I went to Steptoe to change the pads, great job at a fraction of the price! And the gearbox leak should be nothing to worry about. Thanks Neil! :thumb
